Re: Anyone else have a bipolar child?

where in te process of wodering is DS is and bringing him to a mental health professional. My MIL is and it is hard for us to tell with DS because he is also autistic, but his moods are out of control. What was the process that got you to this diagnosis for your DS , if you don't mind my asking?

Re: Anyone else have a bipolar child?

My DS was very aggressive and had violent mood swings. He would be sitting watching TV, and then for no reason would get up and go over and start choking his sister. Things like that.

We got him in to a psychiatrist and they took a few months to evaluate him and figure things out. He scored moderately high on all the surverys for bipolar so that's what his diagnosis was.

We had to use a bunch of different meds before we found ones that worked. But I'm glad we did! He's a completely different kid these days. He still has his bad days every once in a while, but I can leave him in a room alone these days without worrying that he'll kill one of his siblings.

Here is a really helpful site with lots of info and stuff: http://www.bpkids.org/site/PageServe...name=lrn_about

Re: Anyone else have a bipolar child?

thanks so much for te info..that sounds just like my son. I think the pedi has been brushing off my concerns becasue of his autism. I know of many other children who have autism and don't behave like my son! He also talks about "hitting and biting and pinching and kicking things alot" thanks for the info...

Re: Anyone else have a bipolar child?

JUst got back form the doctors today and they are treating DS for bipolar
we are going to start risperidone. I am very nervous about it but they say it will help with the violent mood swings and agressiveness . I fell like this is a huge deal, bipolar is so serious and I know how much my mother in law has suffered. Like having autism isn't bad enough for the poor little guy. I am just glad there is someone else on her to vent and chat with....
