Natural Induction Methods
So I know there are a ton of methods out there, but I am wondering if anyone has a method they swear by?
I am only 38w4d at this point, but wanting to have some ideas in place in case I go over 41 weeks to avoid medical induction. Thanks!

Re: Natural Induction Methods
Try accupressure/reflexology massage by a very skilled reflexologist, with the right points on the feet and ankles and the right types of essential oils (I forget which ones - but a good massage therapist would now - find one who has done it for other moms), then afterwards,(TMI): have sex...
My experiece: I was induced with our first for emergency birth with pre-eclampsia, Pitocin is the WOrst!!. It was a nightmare. The second was a beautiful nonmedicated hospital birth that was natuarally induced with the above method at 38 weeks 4 days because my doctor spooked me by talking about inducing at the 39 week mark (just because )... My third was naturally induced by the above method - with repeated attempts and 2 trips to the hospital was finally born at 39 weeks 3 days only after the doctor ruptured membranes and broke my water, also a non medicated birth SO - I think it can work under the right circumstances... If I ever have another it will I pray be a HOME birth! Good luck and try and avoid pitocin if at all possble!

Re: Natural Induction Methods
I've heard really great things about reflexology massage. I've never done it, but know several women who swear that it worked for them.
There's also a restaurant in Atlanta that says their Eggplant Parmigiana can induce labor - they have a "baby wall" in the restaurant, full of pictures of babies who were born within 24 hours of their mothers eating the dish. Here's a link to the website, with a recipe: http://www.scalinis.com/Bambino.htm

Re: Natural Induction Methods
huh... I love egg plant!
I will have to look into the reflexology. I was induced with DD and pitocin was a nightmare! I had a bunch of issues as a result and I WILL NOT go that route ever again. (The Dr.s thought I had IUGR, which I did not)

Re: Natural Induction Methods
natural induction methods will only work if your LO and your body are ready.
Sex, nipple stimulation, EPO, and red raspberry leaf tea are the best ways to help your body along. |

Re: Natural Induction Methods
Honestly, I agree with the poster above. The natural methods will do nothing but frustrate you and leave you feeling hopeless if your body and your baby are not ready.
With my DS, I did EPO, membrane sweep twice, spicy food, sex, walking walking walking, some herb called macca my MW used, nipple stumulation, pressure points, AND castor oil --- ALL within like 6-12 hours and many silmultaneously - and that kid stayed in for another week after that. After that, I am completely convinced that nothing works until your body is ready to go!

Re: Natural Induction Methods
I also agree that your body and LO have to be ready. I have people ask me all of the time now (and I am not even at my dd) if I am just ready to have this baby. I truly feel like babies come when they are ready, barring anything out of the norm like a health issue.

Quote:
I did not do castor oil and did not have membranes stripped only because my cervix wasn't dilated enough to have it done. in the end I got really REALLY ticked off at everyone who kept calling/texting/emailing/writing on my wall saying "isn't she here yet" when she was only a week over due and cried REALLY hard for 2 plus hours.. I really think that is what put me in labor was being emotionally exhausted. OOHHH plus we had a lunar eclipse, several really big storms/storm systems, very hot days, and I was dehydrated one day and that still didn't bring out the baby.

Re: Natural Induction Methods
I swear it was the Indian food that put me into labor--all 30 hours plus, probably because my body wasn't really ready!

Re: Natural Induction Methods
Every dr we have had including the midwife swears by intercourse. Semen helps soften the cervix opening and helps with dilation. My wife also made me cook her eggplant parmesan from scratch almost every other day. Good luck.
