Gestational Diabetes Moms
How much insulin are you taking? How often? Have you had to keep cutting your carbs? I've been on insulin since about 10 weeks and am 26 weeks now and my readings are creping up. They're adjusting my insulin but I'm wanting to cut my carbs back more too. So what are you eating and how much insulin are you taking?

Re: Gestational Diabetes Moms
I am not on insulin, but as soon as three of my numbers would be off I have to go on insulin. I changed my diet to low carb, the diet the dietician gave me did not work for me, I am not a peanut butter/ cracker person. I cut out rice, pasta, most breads etc. For breakfast I usualy have crisp bread (those are all low in carb per slice and allowe you to eat more, they are also low in calories) with egg, roast beef, different kinds of cheese, ham and I like to add tomatoes, cucumber etc. I cannot eat fruit in the morning. For a snack I will have an apple, pear, berries, cantaloupe etc. For lunch I like mixed salads with steak or chicken, a whole wheat wrap with tuna salad or chicken salad or with beans and beef etc. I also like greek yoghurt with flax seeds and fruit of choice added, almonds mixed in. In the evenings we will have fish or meat with veggies, chillie con carne or lentil soup. I am not hungry, eat healthier, but the cut off of most carbs (white breads, rice, potatoes, pasta) and the fact that I do not eat any sweets made me lose weight. I also added a lot more exercise and try to move after meals. I look better now at 35weeks than I did at 25weeks and I feel better as well. My A1C went from 5.7% to 5.3%, I will definately try to keep the diet up after delivery and make it more of a life style. I need to get to a healthy weight after pregnancy to prevent developing diabetes. Even if you are on insulin you should watch your diet, but sometimes the pregnancy hormones are so strong that there is not much you can do. I have to be a lot more careful now than three weeks ago. I hope to prevent going on insulin, but if I have to than so be it. Good luck to you!Your reward will be a healthy baby!!!!

Re: Gestational Diabetes Moms
I am not on insulin nor oral meds but totally diet controlled. I had to switch from regular whole wheat bread to low carb whole wheat bread. I had to decrease my skim milk comsumption from 1 big glass in the morning to one child size glass. I stay away from anything white and all pasta, rice and most bread except my low card bread. I eat 3 meals plus 2 snacks a day and don't feel hungry since getting off the carbs. I snack on peanuts, cashews, string cheese, raw carrots and low fat ranch dressing. Fruits tend to raise my sugars and I can eat a SMALL portion of them for a snack. (5 strawberries, 1/2 banana, but watermelon is fine). It took some experimenting to see what fruits were a no-no for me. I eat lots of eggs, scrambled, egg salad sandwiches. I also switched to no sugar preserves for my PBJ sandwiches. Sometimes, maybe 2-3 times a week, I get a 100 calorie pack of chocolate covered pretzels for my snack. For my sweet fix I drink Crystal Light Rasberry Ice and Lemon Tea. I usually drink that with lunch, and it is water the rest of the day except my one child size glass of skim milk in the morning. I find that I don't really even crave any carbs now. I eat a lot of salads with griled chicken breasts cut up in them also. I try to keep some lettuce chopped in the fridge to quickly throw a salad together.

Re: Gestational Diabetes Moms
I'm almost 36 weeks, and I've been on insulin since 16 weeks. I'm up to 10u Humalog and 8u Humulin-N with breakfast, 7u Humalog with supper, and 14u Humulin-N at bedtime. Everything needs to be upped right now, though -- all my numbers are rising. (Thanks for the reminder to call the endo today and get adjusted!). I try to keep my carbs at around 30g breakfast, 30-45g lunch, 30-45g supper, and no more than 15 for snacks, but some days I do go over. I'm not super-careful about diet because the insulin really helps to compensate (and I've been known to use an extra unit or two if I know I'm eating something that will require it, like pasta or dessert). But I do try to be sensible and I've only gained 11 lbs with this pregnancy, and Baby is measuring right on track.
Last pgcy followed a similar trend of needing increased insulin right up until the end, and LO was born at 39wks weighing 7 lbs 7 oz. Don't beat yourself up about needing more insulin -- I found that when I tried to control my diet too strictly, I was always hungry and quickly became resentful. A few extra units will do you a world of good and allow you to satisfy your hunger without having to sacrifice your health or the baby's. Good luck!

Re: Gestational Diabetes Moms
I have been doing everything i can to stay off insulin. Right now im on 2.5 mg glyburide at night to control fasting sugars and ive been doing really well with just dieting. However, im almost 33 weeks and they are creeping up
Just sent my numbers in and waiting to hear back from the doc. I absolutely do not want to be on insulin. Taking glyburide im fine with but insulin freaks me out.

Re: Gestational Diabetes Moms
The diet plan from diabetes management had me eating
30 carbs for breakfast 45-60 carbs for lunch/dinner 3 snacks 15-30 carbs My breakfast I've had to cut back to around 15 and if I stay 30 for lunch I do good. They just increased my insulin on Tuesday and I go back next Tuesday to evaluate again. I just hate the feeling of not being in control and I'm afraid I'll have a 10 lb baby and nothing that I have for him will fit.

, I guess my hard work on diet and exercise doesn't work so well regarding weight and size. Oh well, at least I didn't expose my baby to high bs. BTW the recommendet amount of carbs by the dieticican did not work for me either, amounts were too high. It also took a while to figure out which carbs were good for me. Since the hormones are getting stronger it is normal that you might need more insulin, I think my numbers are going up as well without a change in my diet. Good luck to you, I am sure your baby will fit in the things you bought. My ds was born at 8lbs. and was in nb clothes.

I am waiting for my doctor to call in all my appts but my sugars are elevated. I cant get below 109 fasting and get 150-165 after eating (2hours)
I will most likely be put on insulin if my diet cant get my fasting numbers below 100. Yesterday I ate at 8:30 and didnt eat after that (went to bed) and my fasting this am was 109. Ugh. When did your doc decide to do insulin?

Re: Gestational Diabetes Moms
I've been on insulin since 10 weeks. I randomly checked my sugar with my dads meter at around 6 weeks and since I was still so early, diet wasn't working and the baby was still developing they wanted to start me right away. They are assuming I just have GD but treating me as if I had Diabetes before pregnancy. I'm really hoping I don't have to deal with this after pregnancy but I plan to keep up with the diet anyway so hopefully I won't develop type 2.
