Milk allergy backfire
2 questions:
1) how does what I eat effect the taste of my milk? For 3 days I've been eating only salads, eggs, chicken & fruit trying to figure out what ds is allergic/sensitive to. He has been extra fussy today. Fussy @ the breast, squirming, not nursing well, coming off, not wanting the other side. Then crying later & acting hungry but again screaming & not wanting to nurse. I'm not eating broccoli or any other gasy foods. 2) if your lo has a milk allergy are u also staying away from beef, soy & caramel coloring? |

Re: Milk allergy backfire
It could just be a coincidence. And dairy takes 2 to 3 weeks to get out of baby and mama's systems, so if he's affected by dairy, it's still affecting him.
What you eat does change the taste of your milk a bit, but I don't think it's a huge change. If you eat a lot of garlic or curry, for instance, baby will taste a bit of it in your milk. I don't think ordinary foods that you were probably eating anyway to some degree before would make a big difference. I can't really comment on beef or caramel coloring, but when I wondered what was bothering my DD, I did cut out soy, too. ETA: how old is your baby?

Fwiw, when you cut out dairy the 3rd day after that is usually the worst of it, if it's a dairy allergy/sensitivity it should start improving.
I cut dairy when DS was 3 weeks old. On the 3rd day after he projectile vomitted multiple times and wouldn't nurse longer than 5 seconds. The next day was a complete change. Good luck, keep us updated

Re: Milk allergy backfire
Those symptoms are classic reflux symptoms as well. Also, Baby doesn't have to spit up to have reflux, if the acid is coming up into the esophagus, it doesn't have to come all the way out, although frequent spitting is also a typical symptom.
My babies all have reflux (genetic), and they want to nurse all the time because they think it will help, then scream because it hurts and won't nurse, then want to nurse again...etc etc...

He's 2 months. We've had projectile puking which is not near as bad. It was 3-15 times huge uncontrollable all over him us the floor etc per feeding. We are down to 1-3 manageable spit ups not much projectile. He's just never been like this before. Just gave him milk from the freezer & he took it much better so maybe it is my milk that he is refusing???

Re: Milk allergy backfire
I feel for you
![]() My son (and me too) is allergic/sensitive to gluten/soy/dairy. I know you don't want to hear it but if you eat dressing on your salad you may want to check the ingredients for dairy and you may want to also consider cutting out any soy (you will cry when you see what all THAT stuff is in) and maybe even the eggs. Once things get settled in his system I would suggest adding ONE item at a time to your diet and not adding a new one for a week, longer if he has a reaction. That way you can find out what it is that he is having problems with. As far as the caramel coloring some people have a problem with it and some don't. If you have a dairy allergy it is either the PROTEIN or the SUGAR that you are reacting to. If it is the protein then lactaid won't help. If it is the sugar (lactose) then you MAY be able to get away with using lactaid products. http://kellymom.com/babyconcerns/food-sensitivity.html A wonderful site for BF'ing questions of all kinds. Also check out... http://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/conte...me=information A WONDERFUL Dr. in Canada that has some AMAZING information on BF'ing! You may want to check into getting some Colic Ease (gripe water)... I prefer this brand for the reasons they describe on their site http://www.colicease.com/index.php?o...=66&Itemid=153

Re: Milk allergy backfire
I was thinking reflux as well. DS has silent relux. Scream, arch, trun bright red. He stopped breathing twice while refluxing and spent a week in the hospital. I cut out dairy, he takes Prevacid, and sees a chiropractor regularly. Good luck.
