Re: Nourishing traditions (WAP) support thread for April, May and June...
Oh yay!
I was wondering when the April thread would begin. We are doing better with our progress... For anyone who doesn't know, I had a terrible time getting my 5yo son to even think about eating healthier. My girls generally eat a very wholesome diet anyway and love trying different/new foods, so switching their diets over entirely was never any big deal. They've enjoyed it. But my poor boy had gotten so addicted to fast food, chicken nuggets and sweets that eventually it was all he'd eat. I'm happy to report that most of his "sweets" are just fruits now, and I'm cutting the frozen foods back bit by bit to almost nothing - hopefully it WILL be nothing soon. He has actually branched out and tried a good piece of grassfed beef and loved it! He requested more for dinner tonight. So, we're off to a great start. ETA - yummy recipe Jen! I'm always looking for more recipes for this diet so feel free to add any more you might have.

Re: Nourishing traditions (WAP) support thread for April, May and June...
I don't do the full WAP by any means. We are dairy-free and I disagree with certain ideas in NT, BUT overall I appreciate most of the WAP and NT info.
I am trying to soak ALL my grains and I'd like to start water kefir to replace the dairy probiotics we can't have. I'd like to replace the soy we use, but it is hard in certain situations. I also would like to sprout and dehydrate many foods, but I have a lot of expensive appliances I'd like to buy: Grain mill (right now I use my Blentec) Dehydrator (I want the good one, like $200) Good baking stone from Pleasant Hill Grain Anyway, that's my little intro .I look forward to gathering and sharing info on this thread!

I've done water kefir before. I actually liked it quite a bit. It always has a small alcohol content, but mine kept getting stronger and stronger so I eventullay stopped. I wonder what I did wrong.
Do you ever do almond or hazelnut milk to replace soy. I like them better.

Re: Nourishing traditions (WAP) support thread for April, May and June...
Yes, I use homemade almond milk and it is good. I am preggo right now and for awhile I was so sick I was willing to eat ANYTHING that would stay down. (That's when we switched to buying unwashed farm eggs.)
Soymilk was one of the only proteins I could handle without vomiting and the kids are sorta loving it now. It is easy protein, like milk for the dairy-eaters. I think soy is less bad if it is fermented, like soy yogurt or soy kefir, miso or tempeh. So I'm trying to figure out some other yummy and SUPER_EASY proteins to replace it in my pregnancy diet now that I can keep things down better. Again, soy isn't great but I don't think it is the all-out evil NT makes it to be! I also feel like during pregnancy I do my best but sometimes have to make compromises to get protein in to avoid being so sick.... And I can only eat so much meat/ so many eggs in a day!!!

Re: Nourishing traditions (WAP) support thread for April, May and June...
Can anyone share how to get started with water kefir grains? I hear a little here and there about them, but don't exactly know what it's all about. I think you can buy some from companies, but then I've heard of people sharing kefir grains and getting them that way......how does that all work? Is it like a kombucha batch that blossoms an extra scoby each time that you can break off and share with a friend? TIA!

Re: Nourishing traditions (WAP) support thread for April, May and June...
Jen~ I would love for you to share more recipes that are gluten free
For medical purposes I might have to go gluten free and am trying to learn as much as possible if the doc says it might help me. Any websites or good tips for beginers?Freedom~ That's great that he is starting to enjoy healthier foods. Way to go! Mo~ I really want a dehydrator too! Also on my want list is a Vitamix! Shalom~ I bought some water kefir grains from Cultures For Health. After rehydrating the grains the first couple of batches were not so great but soon after that it makes pretty good water kefir! Really easy and they send great instructions. Mine have not multiplied all that much. However, I keep mine in the fridge after each batch...maybe thats why?

Re: Nourishing traditions (WAP) support thread for April, May and June...
Subbing as I am exploring traditional foods more and pondering adding pastured meat back into my diet. We have chickens and get our own eggs and I am switching my dairy to pastured and going to try raw milk.
My husband eats meat. I have been having some red meat cravings since getting pregnant (I'm 16 weeks). Not crazy or anything, but there. I have been curious about pastured meat. We toured a local farm that does meat csa boxes. I'm just not sure I can get past the squimishness I have from being veggie for a number of yrs. Cindy

Re: Nourishing traditions (WAP) support thread for April, May and June...
UGH- the allergist appointment!!! My ds #3 is allergic to pretty much everything, which I have now confirmed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Luckily, this allergist treats with homeopathics, and suggests a rotation diet. Annoying, but doable I think. Too bad on the wheat, as I was getting REALLY good at no-knead bread fermented for a looong time. I will have him tested for kamut and spelt, too, because those are so easy to do in yeast bread. Sigh. So gluten-free recipes would be great if anyone has some to share. I may need to splurge on a grain mill for the bean flour and rice flours we will need. Here is a list of our allergies, worst to least: Milk Wheat Sugar (cane and beet) Soy Corn Eggs Yeast Plus Juniper and Cedar trees!!! Nice, huh? So many foods recmmended by NT are not good for my fam. Sigh. OH- and I have candida and everything says no fermented foods when you have candidiasis. Hoping there are some experts on this thread...???????????
