Caffine and nursing

Does caffeine effect a baby through breast milk? I've found a conflicting opinions and I'm a major coffee addict. Opinions?

I have heard that it does. I drink a cup once in a while and I don't see a difference in him, I just limit quite a bit.

It completely depends on the kiddo. I'm a caffeine addict and I didn't give up coffee, tea, or Dr pepper while pregnant or nursing. My dd was never affected behaviorally by it and she nursed for 13 months. It's a total crapshoot whether or not it'll keep your baby up, but if you need coffee to get through the day, I would experiment a little to see possible effects.

I agree that it depends on the baby. I'm testing the waters right now as I NAK my brand new 4 day old while sipping on a cup of coffee. I'm going to see how one cup a day effects her. *crossing my fingers*

Totally depends on the baby. I did not give up caffiene with my son at all and ironically, he sleeps BETTER when I have some. I drink 2-3 cups of 1/2 caff coffee a day.

I can't have any with DD 2, and I have been one tired mama.

I disagree that it depends on the baby. The way the caffeine AFFECTS your baby maybe, but it's not like some babies get the caffeine and some don't, kwim? Caffeine does get passed through breastmilk. No harm in experimenting, but even if your baby seems to do well, just keep caffeine limited, just as in pregnancy.

ITA! With this new one it doesnt seem to cause any negative side effects but with ds 4 it really bothered him. I will do a cup in the am and then another(maybe if I "need" it) in the afternoon and were good whereas I couldnt do that with the older dude! Goodluck!

I love my coffee too! I switched to the 1/2 caff coffee and have about 2 to 2 1/2 cups every morning. It hasn't caused any problems yet!
