MAY Flowers ... \*/ Garden Chat thread \*/
Hey girls! I've got a ridiculously crazy day ahead of me, but here's the link to a FB album with some new garden pics and coop progress. We have about half of it done and I STILL haven't gotten a chance to fill that darn 3rd garden bed!!

I can't view your album Liz...
Maybe it has to do with DH being logged into his FB and not me? I'll just check on my droid later. I love staring at your fluffy chicks!SO.... we finally have some May-like weather again! It got cold and wet, and we had a few freezes... it was 29* yesterday morning. I'm glad we didn't get anything out there during that warm spell we had in March! We planted for what's "typical" around here for frost with our last frost still being 2 weeks away. Our peas & lettuce are finally coming up. For some reason the spinach decided to do nothing. I'll try to get some pics while the boys are outside after Z does his homework. Anyone have lemon basil? If so, how do you use it? There's an herb garden here, HUGE herb garden (about 16'x24' at a minimum), and it's overrun with lemon basil. It hasn't been taken care of since the neighbor's girlfried moved out 18 months ago. If I had my way, I'd pull it all out and start over with something else, but DH just wants me to use what's there. I don't know what to use it for, other then when we roast chicken. I added some to risotto last night, and it wasn't bad... but other than that, I'm clueless... and there's a LOT of it.

Oops, sorry! For some reason that album reverted to "friends" instead of public. If anyone wanted to see, it's fixed! Oh and if you wanna friend me I'm cool with that too.
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...3707115&type=1 Quite a few of us here had little or no success with Spinach so don't take it personally. LOL I read somewhere that spinach is one crop that has a really cruddy germination rate. I have no idea what you'd use lemon basil for. Maybe broiled fish or a pasta dish? I like to use my basil for pesto (mmmmm...yummy) but I don't know if lemon basil would taste right with the Parmesan and stuff. ok so DAG_GUM my house is smelling barn-ish. It's like the chickens just decided a couple days ago to up the stink factor by 1000%. Gotta get these girls OUT asap. Eww!!

All I can think of is Mater on the Cars Toons DVD N got for Christmas. He watched that thing for HOURS... I swear I heard Mater in my sleep! DAG_GUM!No one here eats fish unless it's Tuna from a can, and forget pesto. I did put some cream and parm cheese in the risotto before putting in the basil, so maybe pair it with an alfredo sauce? Nothing too impressive on pics here, other than my strawberries! The neighbor said hers turned all black during the start of our cool spell. The side of the house our berries are on never gets frost since they're shielded by the house. Crooked picture compliments of Z ![]() ![]() Some peas... ![]() Lettuce mixes (ignore the maple seeds)... ![]() Sunflowers from last year popping up! ![]() Rhubarb anyone? What do I do with this? DH will mow it over again if I don't do anything with it... ![]() This is a tiny corner of the herb garden. The basil took over, and the poor Irises won't even bloom (they didn't last year either), that's how neglected this garden is. There's some chives and mint, and a lonely twiggy looking sage in there too...

Re: MAY Flowers ... \*/ Garden Chat thread \*/
I'm completely dumb when it comes to rhubarb. It looks like celery to me, and I have no idea how to cook it either. Lol! Probably doesn't help that I have no idea how to cook it...
So our rainy days are being followed by sunny and humid. We've had more peas pop up and take off in the last 2 days... it's time to start trellising them. Some of the bean seeds are just starting to germinate (we had to rebury them because all our rain washed away some of the topsoil). Peppers and broccoli are holding up well so far, and the tomatoes look like they'll need fertilized in over the weekend (bottom leaves are turning yellow). Only problem we're having is something is munching the leaves on our bush cucumber. I have no idea what it could be. DH said that he noticed some of the one leaf gone when he planted it, and I KNOW that the cucumber had 3 leaves when I picked it up from the high school. Now it's down to one leaf that's slightly munched, and two stubs. Darn bugs!

Re: MAY Flowers ... \*/ Garden Chat thread \*/
Hey ladies!
I'm going to join in! I'm a newbie! Just planted my first real garden (last year I ignorantly just stuck stuff in the ground and forgot to water half the time lol). I'm excited to see things growing and blooming already!! The most exciting it seeing the seeds I planted started to poke through the ground. I planted green beans in the ground from seeds and a squash and zucchini in plastic containers I reused from my basil and cilantro plants. Oh, and carrots in a planter too. The kids are excited to see everything sprouting! So exciting!

Re: MAY Flowers ... \*/ Garden Chat thread \*/
I'm joining in! I finished one of my flower/herb gardens. I mixed them in together because I'm not growing tons of herbs..
Andrew just tilled up the garden. We just bought this house and there was no area that was preused for a garden.. So, we got that all ready. We aren't grow from seedlings this year. With us moving and this being our first year doing some serious gardening, it wasn't happening - maybe next year. Last frost is about a week and a half away, but the weather is looking pretty good and we might brave it this weekend and start planting some things. We are doing some tomatoes, zucchini, spinach (even though I hear its evil and doesn't grow lol), squash, peppers (a variety - green and definitely hot because he loves peppers) green beans... IDK what else yet.. but all I know is I'm sooooo ready for a nice amount of zucchini. I hate those little itty bitty zucchini in the stores that cost 1.33 each.

Re: MAY Flowers ... \*/ Garden Chat thread \*/
I want to join too! This is my first year having a vegetable garden, and I cannot believe what I have been missing out on. It is so fun! We planted our spring veggie garden almost 4 weeks ago. DH built two raised beds, a 4x4 for strawberries (planted 2 weeks ago), and a 4x8 for veggies. We are following the square foot gardening method. We planted broccoli, cauliflower and spinach from transplants. We also planted onions, potatoes, radishes, lettuce, carrots and peas! One type of lettuce didn't come up at all, but everything else is doing great! We should have radishes to harvest in the next couple of days.
I am battling aphids, though. I have been spraying them off with the hose everyday, but they keep coming back. I am going to try spraying them with soapy water tomorrow to see if that helps. Any other ideas? I lost a few radish plants to them before I realized what was happening, but now that I have been spraying them off daily they don't seem to be doing much damage. I also found 3 cabbage worms this morning and disposed of them. I will have to keep my eye out for those little boogers! We are still about 2 weeks away from planting summer stuff, so I am trying to figure out what we want to grow.cutebluebaby Yay for strawberries! Bethany89 and myall4him2 Hope everything goes well! We are just starting out too! 3lilbubs Thanks for sharing your pics! Everything looks great!
