Is this sciatica?

I'm only 5 or 6 weeks today. I went to pick up my daughter this afternoon and the left side of my lower back completely spasmed. There has been a dull ache directly above my hip ever since that bugs me when I sit or shift my weight. I don't know that I've ever experienced sciatica, but it seems a bit early, no?

Ime sciatica has always been a pinching feeling and shoots down my leg. No matter what is causing the pain going to a chiro will probably help.

Re: Is this sciatica?

It sounds like sciatica. I've had it feel a few different ways. A burning sensation that runs down one of my legs, a pinching in my butt and down my leg or an aching pain that almost feels like my leg/hip is separating. Sometimes it's bad enough to make me limp.

I've had a fractured vertebra since the age of 11 and I've had very frequent sciatica ever since. I've had good success with accupuncture and doing certain yoga stretches. I would use caution with a chiropractor they often use pseudo science and can't diagnose basic back issues. When my back started hurting when I was 11 my mom took me to a chiropractor, he did some x rays and pronounced that I had scoliosis and then started cracking. A month later I was worse and my mom finally took me to a specialist at the children's hospital. A few x rays later and the spine doc said it was extremely easy to see that my vertebra was fractured and he even told my mom that if she hadn't brought me in their was a good chance I would have lost the ability to walk because my spine was completely destabilized, the last thing I needed was somebody twisting me and cracking me.

Needless to say I am not a fan of chiropractors and I think people should be way more cautious about using them than most are...

I always get it really bad early on and then it goes away for most of the second trimester, only to return around 5-6 months. I will get spasms at the beginning - sometimes hard enough to make me fall. The ache is always in my low back and the pain is always in the low back and shooting down my leg. A pain above your hip is on the wrong side although that could be round ligament pain? I don't know if I've ever gotten that so early. Yoga helps me stretch it out and feel a little better, good luck

Me too. Sciatica really limited what I could do when I was pregnant. It was horrible from about 10 weeks and just got worse and worse.

Boo. Now that I think about it it does feel like a pinch, almost like I need to pop the joint or something. It absolutely shocked me when I picked up my kid, it was so painful. I'll do some yoga in the morning. Thanks for the stories, ladies!

Sorry that was your experience. Imo, a chiro is like any dr in that you need to make sure to do your research and find a good one. Sadly it sounds like you were stuck with a lemon of a chiro.

Re: Is this sciatica?

Ok so it's gotten substantially worse in a matter of hours. I woke at 4am in excruciating pain, and havent gone back to sleep. I can't sit in any position for any period of time. I tried doing some light stretching and it hurt way too much. What is going on?

Re: Is this sciatica?

It does sound like sciatica. I had it from about 7 weeks pregnant on with my 2nd. It awful! There were days I couldn't move. It would come and go, but it was an issue more often than not. I did see a chiro, but it didn't really help.
