My DD is 5.5 months old now and I think she gets bored when she doesn't have toys around. My mom has given her a plastic singing Elmo and a Dora cash register, but I'd like something not plastic. Any recommendations?

At 5.5 months, my kids loved balls and blocks. You could do cloth balls and blocks.

My daughter is about the same age and she LOVES things that crinkle and she can easily pick up and put in her mouth

I know it sounds silly, but she loves to play with cloth, so I often let her play with her burp cloths (clean ones

) and she has fun putting them over her head and pulling them off. It has been really hot here, so I give her a wet cold washcloth and she happily plays with that too

Of course, I supervise!

We haven't done too much else with toys just yet though she has a stuffed rabbit she plays with. I have wooden blocks and puzzles but I think it might be a little early for her, but maybe your little one is ready

Once she can sit up on her own I plan to introduce more building type toys

DS loved sensory toys, his crinkle book especially. It had a little baby safe mirror he was obsessed with on the back. And various materials and things to stimulate. His Melissa and Doug toys were favs also, and they're all wooden. He also loved anything that involved water. Like his cup that has water in between the layers of it and shapes. And bath toys that moved.

My kids are STILL playing with their Haba toys at 2 and 4. We have the set pictured at the top of the page (these http://www.oompa.com/item/JHA-BLKS-E...-Blocks/1.html), as well as the Cordoba set, Plug & Pile Royal Tower, and the Kringlering (which is an AWESOME infant rattle/teether - that one is on Amazon).
I'll warn you, they are expensive...which is why most of ours were gifts, or on the cheaper end.

But, they are totally worth it. Wonderful quality, very durable, and great for open-ended play.
My kids were playing with them right before naps, and I'm thinking of ordering another set at some point, since they like to combine them and make strange new creations.

The website I linked has a lot of lovely toys made with natural & organic materials, and a great variety of sensory toys, which would be perfect for your LO.
