So the doula-in-training who I found via DONA was just hired last week by a large doula group. I didn't interview her until tonight. As a result, her fee has now jumped from $250 to $850.

Can anyone recommend websites for finding student doulas in Canada?

Aha! Not to answer my own question, but I found 1 option via www.doulamatch.net, for anyone else who maybe looking.

Still open to any suggestions any of you may have, too! We really can't afford this, but we can't emotionally afford more birth trauma either, so...

I'm also looking for a student doula so thanks for the website! I'm hoping my midwives office has some names as well when I go on mon.

No suggestions here (sorry!), but really, $850 for a doula??? Is that normal for a non-student? (I've obviously never hired one so I'm genuinely curious). My midwife's fees for all prenatal care and my birth is $3500, so $850 for a doula seems insane to me.

It's a wide range, generally anything $600 or less is on the bargain side and more established doula groups (which provide additional visits, back up doulas, etc.) are closer to the $900 point.

Of course, our midwives are free, so it's not really a comparable market - covered health professionals versus luxury birth support.

Yup, I've heard doula's in canada going for near $1000.

We paid $500 for our last doula. In our area it seems $500-$850 is the norm. We are meeting with a student doula next week so I'm hoping that works out and she is either free or close to free.

Found our doula! She's done her DONA certification and is only charging us food, materials and gas for the pre-natal, post-natal and birth! I find her so calming and empathetic, plus she researched Hypnobabies in advance of our interview (since I'll be her first mama to use hypnosis) and I really appreciate that level of enthusiasm and commitment. Just when I feared we wouldn't be able to afford support - voila!

What about you, Blueberry32, any progress?

Found a student doula who is only charging $100. She's nice so I'm hopeful. It's hard cuz our last doula was just so great and I had known her previously before she became our doula. But its just not in the budget right now.
