Newbie with sewing question about fleece

I found the infamous Katrina shorties and longies soaker patterns for fleece covers and after watching some videos on youtube, I am going to borrow a sewing machine and attempt to tackle making a few.

I am currently expecting #2 (boy) in 5-7 weeks and wanted to know if I should bother with the newborn size for the soakers or just jump to the smalls? He is already measuring big and I will likely deliver early.

What is the approximate weight ranges for each size? We have NB and Small size prefolds and snappies to use until the baby can fit into the B.G. pockets I used with my daughter (at about 3-4 months).

I was thinking of making 2 shorties and 2 longies. How much fabric do I need total?

ETA: Here are the links to the patterns in case you aren't familiar. I found them on pinterest, but I see they were passed around a lot on this site a few years ago

I'm not exactly sure on your weight range question but I know my daughter is a year and 22 lbs and is in a large. If you're making NB and smalls you could probably get away with a yard or yard and a half of fabric, but don't quote me on that.

Re: Newbie with sewing question about fleece

Thanks, I ended up getting 2 yards last night at Joanns since they are having a Columbus Day Sale all weekend and it was a red tag, it only cost me $6 total

I will be going back for some flannel and other stuff before the weekend is over!

DS is 6mo and 20lbs, in a medium. I would skip the newborn, it comes out really tiny.

Skip Newborn longies and go for smalls, but if you're going to make soakers 1 or 2 newborns are great to have! here's my 2 week old 8lb something oz little man sporting a newborn over a fitted, I adored the gentle hug of the leg at that stage.

Re: Newbie with sewing question about fleece

Well I started working on these today. I've cut out one NB and one Small of the soakers. Haven't sewn anything yet...

The newborn longies do look really tiny. I think I'll start with the smalls
