ADHD and Aspergers with ADHD?

Well my almost 6 yr old got dx with Aspergers at 4yrs old. We have really been struggling with his behavior lately and I'm wondering if we have more going on than Aspergers alone. I did an ADHD questionaire online and he would me the criteria for an ADHD dx. But how do I tell the difference between what is Aspergers type stuff and what could possibly be issues with ADHD? I mean my son struggles in attention and stims alot and has sensory issues but would that just be and Aspergers thing or ADHD on top of Aspergers?

Anyone else out there could give me some insight on the typical behavior of a child with just ADHD or child with Aspergers and Aspergers with ADHD? Thanks.

Re: ADHD and Aspergers with ADHD?

I remember those days... My DS2 was diagnosed with ADHD at 4. The meds eased most of symptoms, but thanks to my great pediatrician, something was bothering her about son. He was officially diagnosed with Aspergers almost a year later. A lot of the symptoms of ADHD and aspergers overlap and you don't know which belongs to which.

Re: ADHD and Aspergers with ADHD?

My son has Aspergers, ADHD, and anxiety. He is on meds for the aspergers -it helps the hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and inability to focus. Though he was diagnosed with ADHD first at 7, then aspergers at 9. We were already treating the ADHD, and knew for sure we were dealing with that.

Re: ADHD and Aspergers with ADHD?

My son was diagnosed with adhd and a mood diorder at 6. The dx for a mood disorder came shortly after taking the meds for adhd. Wealways had med issues and side effects so he switched meds often. When he was 11 they started questioning the mood disorder and had him go to a regional center to rule out autism. well they could not rule it out so he now at 13 his dx is high functioning autism and ADHD becausethe ADHD almost rules his life. The autism just effects his social cues, obsessions, figiting, no organization, Very smart but lost, and other things.

My son has Dx of both PDD-NOS and ADHD. He got the ADHD Dx first and started meds after changes to diet and supplements failed to help. The meds made a huge difference but made the autism symptoms more obvious. It is tough it separate the symptoms because they overlap so much. I can tell you what behaviors improve with meds if that helps?
Without meds he
- often leaves the room to do something/get something and forgets immediately why he left the room
- has close to no academic ability
- unable to pay attention to any task other than video games for longer than 30-60sec at a time with having to be redirected.
- completely forgets to eat/drink
- becomes frustrated very easily while trying to complete a task.
- fidgets even more.

We were told if we tried a very low dose of meds and it helped than it's ADHD, otherwise the meds would have no effect or not the desired effect. He had an amazing turn around academically with meds. He went from zero academic success, had never in 4 years of school completed any assignment during class time to passing all subjects and getting some a's and b's now in a mainstream class with only very minor adaptations.
