New question about dishes
What color? Right now we have totally mismatched sets. I want to replace them all. I'm thinking about 12 sets, but I don't know what color. We are a family of 5, maybe someday 6, and even though our kids are young now, we frequently entertain- my parents come for a week or two a few times a year, cousin and her two kids come every few months, sister and her four kids come for a while.
Oh, back to the point. What color? I love clear glass or a nice eggy white with a subtle design. I don't really want something bright, but would be fine with an earthen tone or design. I don't have any China, so if I ever wanted something fancy, I need flexible colors that I can dress up with one fancy napkin or mat. I want sleek, and attractive, yet minimalist, if that makes sense lol.

Re: New question about dishes
I also vote for plain white. White is classic, can be dressed up or down and lets the food be the center of attention. We have just a simple white set from IKEA after previously having some fancy sets with designs and I don't regret the choice at all. They were very affordable and if the kids break some they are easy to replace. The only dishes I have that have colors are DH and my coffee mugs - they are white on the inner and handle with a bright color on the outer (green for his, yellow for mine).

I vote plain white. We only have white dishes and I love it! Simple and classic. Easy to mix & match different brands if it is all white.
Our plates/mugs/bowls are all ikea and serving pieces are white corning ware.

I just ordered Corelle in the Day Dream pattern. I have wanted these for a while. However, white is lovely.

Re: New question about dishes
What about something white with some simple decorative design on the edge? I've seen a few that just have a simple molded design with no color before. I was thinking of doing that myself until I saw some awesome white and purple dishes I fell in love with at Ikea. I'm planning to buy a full set of each, that way we can alternate colors and have plenty for having company over. You may also be able to do this with cream or white and an earth tone set. It gives a neat mix-and match feel while still being classy and easy to dress up.

Re: New question about dishes
I agree white can be dressed up or down very easily with napkins/tablecloth/tablescaping, mixed and matched with other dishes and serving ware if needed, etc. I think 12 sets is perfect if you entertain a lot, and you could even put half of it away when you were not entertaining if it was too much to manage on a daily basis. I would get white, but something with a raised border like PP suggested or a striking design if just plain plates aren't your taste.

Re: New question about dishes
I'm going to be replacing all our adult dishes with these:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-...-Blue/16474407 They look much nicer in person! The blue is a gorgeous cobalt. I saw them at my friend's house and asked her where she got them and was shocked when she said "Wal-Mart!" :-)

Re: New question about dishes
We had black dishes and they were HORRIBLE. We also have everyday glass sets, and those look really beat up quickly. I do not like plain white, as they get gray scratches on them from knives, at least the Corelle ones my mom has have them. I would get a bisque or ivory set.

I can bet black would show water marks. This is a photo of some of our plates. I love them but we only have 3 or 4 and I can't find them. No idea where they came from :-(.
![]() They are hand me downs of hands me downs, so they could easily be 10 or 15 years old, not sure if they even are made anymore.
