Worry worthy or normal?

I realize newborns have a startle reflex and they will sometimes cry in response. Ds-12wks-is starting to worry me though. The last couple days he has been having what I would call an over the top startle response. Everytime he is wide awake. There has been no loud or sudden sounds when it starts. His body goes completely stiff with arms/legs striaght out. His eyes widen and mouth opens. It will last 5-8ish seconds. Afterwards he SCREAMS and it can take up to 10mins to calm him. Is this normal or does it warrent a trip to the ped?

I would call the ped and ask. There might be some internal startle that is causing it. Does he do it in response to loud sounds as well or just in response to the mystery stimulus?

Some loud sounds just get the typical jump and some times a quick cry out that is easily calmed. Other loud sounds dont bother him at all.

It sounds like something other than a startle. Perhaps he's in pain (sudden reflux?) and this is his reaction to it? Or something neurological in nature?

I'm no help, but I'd be calling the ped to ask about it since I am clueless.

It could be silent reflux. Is it happening within an hour of eating?

My little guy is 13 weeks today and has suddenly been startling as well. He also seems to be going through a growth spurt and eating constantly so I'm wondering if his reflux is flairing. It breaks my heart and needless to say neither of us is sleeping great even with cosleeping

Don't quote me, because my foggy brain doesn't always recall things correctly.

But I THINK there is an awareness milestone somewhere at that age. (Don't laugh!) Could he be scared of his gas?
