Clogged Milk Pore

I think I may have a clogged milk pore.

There's a white dot right on the nipple but it doesn't hurt. Any advice on how to treat it would be great! I've heard of clogged milk ducts but not pores on the forum.

Thanks!

I'd try a hot shower and warm compresses and nursing a lot.

Re: Clogged Milk Pore

Every morning I take a hot shower and pump while the baby is asleep. I also nurse DS throughout the day every 2-3 hours so I would think it should have resolved itself... I could try the hot compresses... I read in the Nursing Mother's Companion that you can take a sterilized needle and prick it but I'd rather not... I'm afraid it will hurt and could get infected... Any other suggestions from people who have had a clogged pore?

i've had that before! it will probably resolve by itself, but feel around for tender spots in your breast, especially around armpit area. that could be milk backing up into the duct. if so, proceed with heat therapy and pressure on that spot moving down to the nipple.
if no sore spot, then just rest today, drink plenty, and nurse, nurse, nurse!
p.s. i wouldn't prick it!

In the past I've used a Lethicin supplement from GNC to keep ducts from clogging.

Yeah I kept getting clogged ducts and pores and most went away, I have one stubborn white dot that wont go away and I used the stuff above, I believe it thins out your milk a bit.

Re: Clogged Milk Pore

Those I've known who've had clogged milk pores ended up going ahead and pricking it - it didn't hurt and was VERY effective. (nice stream of milk came out after it was pricked)

So long as your needle is sterilized, it is safe to do. You can always try poking at it with the needle (without actually puncturing it) to see if it is tender if you're worried it will hurt. Often a clogged pore will right itself, but if it does not it can lead to a clogged duct which is more painful and more problematic (and harder to fix if the pore is still clogged).

I'm so glad this doesn't hurt you. I had the "pimples on my nipples" issue for a good two months on and off. It got really painful and my lactation lady couldn't figure out what my issue was.

Popping them during a warm shower worked the best for me. You know you are successful when it squirts out milk.

Kinda gross - but it only came back one more time and I did the same thing and it was gone right away.

Good luck!!

DO NOT REMOVE IT !!! I had the same thing and I removed it w/ a sterilized needle and a few days later developed severe mastitis. Please don't do this.
