phimosis

ds2 is not circ. his doc gave us a referral for a ped urologist at his 3 mo checkup (we skipped the 2 mo check up) with a diagnosis of "phimosis" what i've googled it and i'm confused at how he came to that diagnosis. both dh and ds1 are circ so i have no idea how a "normal" uncirc baby would look, but really it doesn't look "ill" to me kwim? any of you have gone through this? or have any advice?

Re: phimosis

a 3 month old baby does NOT have phimosis. The foreskin is supposed to be tight and adhered to the head of the penis. I would suggest a different pedi, not a urologist. Is he having trouble urinating? I imagine that he tried to retract him too?

Re: phimosis

Yes, an ER doctor said my oldest had phimosis when he was 2, and said he needed to be circ'ed. (We had taken him to the ER b/c he hadn't peed all day and his penis was swollen) We opted to get a second opinion and our regular ped. said that it wasn't phimosis, it's not supposed to retract (which I knew, but wanted a medical opinion). He said that if DS had recurrent infections, we could consider doing an operation where they snip open the skin, not a circumsion.

Sorry if this is rambling!

Re: phimosis

thank you very much! I knew something didn't sound right. he pees normally, like a huge river actually. which is kinda weird since well..the opening is barely there and all, but again i don't know how it's supposed to look.

in the hospital when he was born i was told to retract the foreskin until "red showed" then let it go and by 2 years old it should be fully retractable. i've been trying to do it but really it doesn't move at all, and i don't see any "red" i have no idea what they were talking about.

Noooooo! The red is the tip of his penis, and you shouldn't retract it at all. Hands off mom! My oldest is 5.5 and still isn't retractable. He may not be retractable until he's a teen. From what I've read most boys retract themselves eventually.

If you catch him right before he urinates, you'll notice that the end of the forskin actually opens up to allow the urine out. It tightens again after to protect the head and prevent infections.

The red they are referring to is the head of his penis (its red or redish purple on an intact baby). But that is WRONG, you should NEVER retract a child's foreskin. The only person that should ever retract his penis is HIM. Retraction leads to infection which leads to doctors telling you you need to circ. His penis will become retractable on its own, you do not have to "train" it to.

PLEASE do not listen to them.

Re: phimosis

Everything that I've read about it says that it is physiological in infants, like it is a normal part of development that should be outgrown. It is only a problem in older kids and adults, so I don't know how your doc would have come to that diagnosis, either. Definitely get a 2nd opinion.

Re: phimosis

Hi Mama's! I'm so happy that I found this link.

I've been having some problems with my 2 1/2 yr old son. Here is his history. Born at 32 weeks(but he's fine). Intact penis. Had neutropenia until he was 2 (blood disorder involving white blood cells). After 2 UTI's (which I gave him accidentally using fragranced bubble bath--I didn't know!!), the Dr sent him in for a kidney test and they found slight..I repeat very slight reflux in his left kidney. A year later we had him retested and the reflux was the same, no better, no worse (that was about 9 months ago). Then, about 1 month ago I gave him another UTI in the bathtub (I know, I know...I didn't mean too - he was pulling on his penis so I rolled it back a bit.)

Anyways, so I brought him into the ER b/c he was complaining that his "pee-pee hurt". It also looked pretty red and kind of like a little rash was forming. He was also erect for like 3 hrs b/c he didn't want to urinate. The Dr. told me that we needed to get "the little anteater trimmed" and he made us an appt. the next morning for a urologist. The urologist looked at him for about 1 minute, told me that the small white ring around the tip of his penis when pulled back meant that he had phimosis and he needed a circumcision immediately b/c of his past infections.

When I brought up the idea of using an alternative treatment to surgery such as the topical ointment, he told me that I had offended him and he was the Specialist, he knows what is best...circumcision in 2 weeks.

Anyways...what I am wondering is if anyone has dealt with similar circumstances like these? I've cancelled his surgery and put in a referral to get a second opinion, but the nearest pediatric urologist is in Jacksonville and their first available appt is September 2008. Yikes...

Any herbal or home remedies that I could try? I'm really opposed to circumcision, it seems brutal and barbaric. However, is there a time when we should listen to the Dr. and get a circ? I don't want my son in pain, but...

Oh.. also the Dr. told me to rub Neosporin with Pain Relief on his retracted penis. Does this sound crazy to anyone? Or is this good advice? I don't really want to peel it back at all...but I'll do anything to help him.

Sorry this is so long...I'm just lost!! I don't feel like I get any guidance from my pediatrician either. I was unhappy with my last one so we just switched to a new lady. I'm really not thrilled with her either...but we don't really have any other options in town.

Help please...if you can!

So he has had 3 infections, 2 of which you know were caused by bath products and the urologist claims he needs a circ for phimosis at 2.5yrs of age? And in all this he is telling you to retract your child and that there is no other treatment for phimosis? Is that covering the gist of it? You should never retract him, as lots of pp's have said, no reason for anyone other than your son to retract his forskin. At 2.5yrs there is no way to diagnosis phimosis as it is not uncommon for a forskin to not retract until puberty or even later. In fact some men will never retract and still not have actual phimosis. Is anything else going on other than a couple of infections which you know were caused by outside factors? If not leave him alone. If you are really really concerned that something might be up it is worth it to find a good forskin friendly dr (and mothering.com is the best place to find a good one) and go out of your way to see him/her once just to make sure. That way you know. It may be a pain in the butt to do, but a long trip and a bit of extra cash to get the all clear beats the heck out of an unnecessary circ. And it will put your mind at ease. Then you can blow off the idiots when they tell you this crap.
