Follow up to sore nipples...help/advice needed

Okay, so I think I have narrowed down the problem. DD is pushing my breast with her hand, thus making her suck really powerful, while pulling her head back or down. What does this mean and how do I fix it because I am HATING nursing right now because it is SO painful and really hasn't ever been like this up to this point. She is teething, I know, so I'm not sure if the tooth is complicating things or what. She is 12 months, just to give you some back ground. I don't know what to do, but I'm in total pain and need some relief quickly.

Re: Follow up to sore nipples...help/advice needed

I got some lanlin at the store and put some on after nursing this evening and noticed a sore under one of my nipples, the one that I haven't been able to nurse on because it is too painful. What should I do about this? Any idea what caused it? Should I avoid nursing on this side until it heals?

My DS does the EXACT SAME THING! He's working on a tooth right now too. If anyone knows how to stop this, I'd love to hear it too. Feels like he's trying to rip my poor nipple off. I've tried pressing on the back of his head to keep him from pulling away or holding his hand so he can't push on me, but that upsets him so much, he just breaks down and cries and then I feel bad.

I would say when she starts to do this, take her off and tell her no then put her back on. She is old enough now to start understanding that. If she continues to push and pull, end the session, at least for a few mins to get your point across. This is one thing I was taught to do when DD started biting and it worked even at 6 mo. You take away the food and they listen quick. She needs to understand that what she is doing is painful to you and that it isn't ok. If you think it is her teeth have you thought about giving her some Hylands or some kind of teething med before you nurse her. Maybe she is trying to find relief from you. Just a thought.

As for your sore spot, after you nurse express a couple drops onto the sore and let it dry on there before you put the lanolin on. It will help the sore heal. BM is amazing stuff. I could go on for days about what it can heal. If you decide to avoid nursing that side you really should still try to pump it. For me pumping was less painful than nursing, so I did that from time to time when I had a sore spot, then you can either save it or give it to her instead of that breast.
