? about buttermilk

How do you know when buttermilk goes bad? Is there a sign? how long could you leave it in the fridge before it goes bad? I've always had this question and everytime i get my buttermilk out i wonder 'is it spoiled? or it is ok?" I KNOW it's supposed to taste sour and the smell isn't great either, that's what throws me off because i don't know when it goes bad, KWIM?

I don't want to throw it out if it's not spoilt, but i certainly don't want to cook w/ it if it's gone bad! help!

Stuff like buttermilk and cream don't go bad for much longer than their expiration dates usually. I'd say frothy, bubbly, curds, no go... but other than that, it's ok.
