Ouch!

My 16 month old son has 10 teeth now. When they first started coming in I nipped biting quickly. However now (the last two weeks) as he is falling asleep he has been clamping down. Needless to say it's very painful.

I have teeth marks on both sides, but it seems to be one side that is particularly worse. No blood yet, but I keep checking. I dread nursing him now since I know that their first few sucks are going to hurt a lot.

The other night I couldn't get his mouth apart and I started screaming, it hurt so bad.

Since he is not doing it on purpose while he is awake, do you have any suggestions?

I think we all experience this at some time or another, and yes, it hurts really bad!!! Definitely make sure you are using your finger to seperate and remove his mouth from your breast. Other than that, I just don't have any more suggestions.

Maybe someone else can be more helpful.

Maybe as soon as he starts falling asleep you could do the upside down pinkie swap? Just slide your pinkie in upside down at the corner to break suction and provide the comfort nursing aspect.

I always got my kids used to being unlatched so that they wouldn't get upset when I had to disconnect them for one reason or another. If you unlatch him and continue holding/rocking will he stay drowsy enough to fall asleep without sucking?

No he won't stay asleep if I unlatch him too soon. Today he is even more attached. Even when I think he is asleep enough, he cries. But I did make a discovery last night, his canine teeth are coming in Duh! I should have known my now!
