can it be done after they're made or does it need to be done before?

Re: dyeing wool
It needs to be done before if you want the stripe-y type look, http://www.elementalmuse.com/~stitch...ndex.php?id=44
If you do it after, you can generally dip dye 2-3 colors, and you can do that at home with kool aid packs (I have a link to a great site w/ directions if you are interested I'll look it up).

Re: dyeing wool
i've dyed wool before crocheting - that's lots of fun (and very doable as a novice....i had the best luck with Kool-Aid although I also tried some with Wilton's Cake Dyes). i haven't tried dying and already done up soaker...i think you might have trouble tie-dying it effectively although you could probably do a sort of calico splotchy look (but it might run together)...hard to say.

Re: dyeing wool
I've dyed yarn before knitting and playsilks with kool-aid and with food coloring. Very easy to do... I think it would be hard to tie-dye but you could hand paint or do a single color.
