Hot cereal recipes
We really like oatmeal this time of year but does anyone have any other recipes for hot cereal?

Re: Hot cereal recipes
I make this baked oatmeal recipe like 4-5 times a week:
1/2 cup vegetable oil 3/4 cup white sugar 2 eggs 1 cup milk 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon baking powder 3 cups quick cooking oats 1/2 cup raisins 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon DIRECTIONS Beat together oil and sugar. Mix in eggs, milk, salt, baking powder, oatmeal. Beat well then stir in raisins. Pour into a lightly grease pie pan. Sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Refrigerate \ overnight. The next morning, preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake in preheated oven until firm, about 35 minutes. Serve hot. That is the original recipe but I make serveral substitiutions to make it healthier I use applesauce instead of oil (3/4 cup) cut way back on the sugar- i use 2 tbl of splenda baking mix substitute raisins for any dried fruit (apples, cranberries, mango, etc....) sub egg beaters for real eggs add flax seed and wheat germ to your taste. I have made it the night before like it says or the same day both turn out fine. It also reheats nicely the next day if you don't eat it all.

Re: Hot cereal recipes
I got this recipe from Alton Brown
Love it!1 tablespoon butter 1 cup steel cut oats 3 cups boiling water 1/2 cup whole milk 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon low-fat buttermilk 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon In a large saucepot, melt the butter and add the oats. Stir for 2 minutes to toast. Add the boiling water and reduce heat to a simmer. Keep at a low simmer for 25 minutes, without stirring. Combine the milk and half of the buttermilk with the oatmeal. Stir gently to combine and cook for an additional 10 minutes. Spoon into a serving bowl and top with remaining buttermilk, brown sugar, and cinnamon. ************

Re: Hot cereal recipes
I prefer Oatmeal (or grits, being a southern gal). I've been making baby oatmeal for my youngest DS, but it would work for regular, too. I cut up about half an apple, nuke it for about 30 seconds so it gets soft, and then mix it with the cooked cereal and add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar. Yummy...tastes better than the boxed stuff, too.
