Safe haven laws

So, does your pre-teen or teenager know about the safe haven laws? Do you plan on telling them? If so, at what age? Just curious since that is the topic on Oprah today.

its a law that lets you drop a baby off at a police station or fire dept with no questions asked and no consquences to you. Its to help teens who have babys, instead of them hiding the baby behind/in a trash can or killing it, they have somewhere safe to take them.

I'm watching it right now, and the girl infuriates me.

I'm not sure about the OP's question, though. Will I tell my daughter that if she gets herself pregnant, she can take the baby to a hospital and drop it off? No.

She will know how we feel about sex before marriage, but we will also tell our children that if they ever make a mistake and get pregnant, we will take the child in and help and support them completely.

yup she mad me absolutley SICK, and that she only got 6 years scares me! I will inform not only my daughters but my sons too. There is not excuse that they could not come to me and as far as I am concerned their friends should be able to confide in me as well. I am not saying that I will be happy they are having sex and by all means I will talk to them about why they should not have sex. I hope they save themselves for marriage but in the case they do not I hope they are NEVER affraid to tell me anything!

But I also want to point out I would hope they would not have to use the safe haven because that would just break my heart!

I didn't watch the Oprah (don't watch it often) but I always thought the problem with safe haven laws is that so few people know about them. So you better believe my kiddos will know. Of course I would prefer that they come to me. I hope that we will have the kind of open relationship where they always feel comfortable coming to me about anything large or small. I also hope to be that cool mom that their friends would come to if they needed help. But I want them to know. Hopefully not for their own use, but the unfortunate truth is that most kids learn about sex from their friends. At least mine will have all of the facts to share. Maybe their knowledge can save a baby's life.
