Vegan cooks - nutritional yeast contains what???

MSG! ??

I've been researching msg a lot lately, I have a friend who's husband now has brain damage and the only thing that it is linked to is msg.. anyway..

I'm not vegan, just cutting down on dairy and made a "cheese" sauce today.. but later realized that nutritional yeast contains msg. hmm.. Are there brands that don't contain msg?

I've never yet seen a nutritional yeast that contains MSG so yea, plenty of brands that don't!! Just get Bob's Red Mill or a similar brand (such as Red Star veg support).

Now, Brewer's Yeast does contain MSG. maybe somebody got mixed up on which was which? They're different products.

I don't think all Brewer's Yeast contains MSG either...

It does, unfortunately, by its very nature (being cultured on what it is). It's not specifically MSG actually but another form of excitotoxin. Same effect though.

But.. true brewer's yeast is hard to find and quite bitter (as well as being brown). There's no mistaking it for NY!

Hmm... right. I do understand that brewers and nutritional yeast are very different ... I've read a lot of info on NY containing a form of a free glutamate... here's some links that carry some info... http://www.rawfreedomcommunity.info/...ead.php?t=1881

What do u think?

Oh.. and it seems that Red Star is one of the brands that is a major culprit...

Re: Vegan cooks - nutritional yeast contains what???

people who are mistaken. If you read the info by Dr. Russel Blaylock (pretty much the pioneer in excitotoxin research) it becomes clear that nutritional yeast isn't the problem. It's not cultured on the same medium therefore doesn't have the free glutamate like brewer's yeast and other related problems like autolyzed yeast have. Not all yeast=free glutamate, but a lot of people do mistake it especially since so many consider BY and NY to be the same.

BY is cultured on malted barley which is itself an excito. NY is cultured on sugar beets--a simple carb.

We've been excitotoxin-free for a couple years now and with how sensitive my boys are (twins with ADHD) I can guarantee NY is not an excitotoxin.

eta: autolyzed yeast, yeast food and other such are usually made form torula yeast. here's info on that:

Re: Vegan cooks - nutritional yeast contains what???

Hello.

I was reading about nutritional yeast and came across this thread.

You mentioned you have been exitotoxin free for sometime. Is nutritional yeast a part of your diet or do you avoid it?

I have told to go on a low sodium diet. And so cheese etc is out of the picture. I heard NY substitutes the cheesy flavour in sauces, etc. It does have free glutamic acid, though.

Suds.
