Doc. Not liking ecological breastfeeding for PP birth control.
My Dr. wanted to know my method of BC for after the baby and I said I planned to intentionally use lactational amenorrhea practicing "ecological breastfeeding" for natural child spacing.
Well she and her apprentice are telling me it won't work effectively (even though it did - my child was 4 when I concieved) I don't want the issue brought up again because I don't want to be patronized in front of my husband, who will likely be paranoid if he hears our method won't work. Which is sure to affect our intimate life, if he gets that idea in his head. I feel like they are alluding to an IUD because they know I don't like hormones??? But I don't want that either. What are you supposed to do as the less educated patient and the Dr. doesn't like your BC method of choice?

Well if you are set in what you want to do, then it doesn't really matter what the Doc says, does it?

Re-educate your Dr? Also, could you leave DH at home or in the waiting room? Really, it's non of your Dr's business what you are or aren't using unless you choose to discuss it with them.

Its not a die hard form of BC, even if it worked once...... But that shouldn't matter your choice for BC is your choice.

Re: Doc. Not liking ecological breastfeeding for PP birth control.
Most people don't know that Ecological Breastfeeding (which takes 7 specific criteria, please read all 7 bullet points under "Ecological Breastfeeding" at this link).) is actually an option for a lot of women.
Of course, the level of hormones which suppress ovulation varies from woman to woman, but if you're following all 7 criteria to increase the chances of lactational amenorrhea, and you listen to your own body, you can definitely avoid pregnancy without barriers or pills. It's 98-99% effective for the first 6 months. After that point, it really depends on the woman. If you have a history of success with the method (conceiving so late after the first child because of BFing amenorrhea), I don't see what the problem is with continuing. Be firm with the doctor, remain self assured in your choices, and perhaps suggest the book Breastfeeding and Natural Child Spacing: How Ecological Breastfeeding Spaces Babies by Sheila K. Kippley. It's by no means a medical text or study, but having a reference might be valuable. In any case, if you feel pressured again, find another doctor.

Re: Doc. Not liking ecological breastfeeding for PP birth control.
Doc shouldnt push BC on you, period. She should ask if you want it and when you decline that should be the end of the story.

For real..what pp's said. It's your choice. It may not be as reliable as other methods, however if it's what you choose then so be it!!

I don't really see it as being any of his business. Your BC is your own business, right ?!?

Re: Doc. Not liking ecological breastfeeding for PP birth control.
IF you feel you must say something to him, give him some actual written info on LAM and/or NFP. Did you tell him it worked for your pregnancy this time? Lots of times with doctors I just smile and go about my bidness.....since it is MY bidness. If he asks again, ask him why he is so curious. Tell him "nothing we want to have our kids close together" or something. Or tell him thanks for the info they provide, if YOU have any questions or need more info, you will be sure to ASK him. If not, then you are set
