Who else makes their own dipes?

Just for themselves mainly (maybe with the dream to become a wahm one day)???

I'm curious as ever since I started making my own pocket fitteds I'd easily sell all other fitteds that I have and only use mine as I love them so much and am so proud of myself when I see them on DS's tush!!! (I'm only sparing you with weekly brag posts! LOL)

So, who else feels like me?

Yeah That!

I keep telling the hubby that I need to get a sewing machine so I can try making my own ... he's like "well, learning would certainly keep you off the Internet buying 'em all day"

Re: Who else makes their own dipes?

Well, I would LOVE to make my own dipes now that I finally set up my sewing machine.

My question is, where do you get the material? I guess you can use cute knit fabric for the outside layer, but what do you stuff it with???? Where do you get hemp and velour and other absorbent fabrics for stuffers?

LOL, that's too funny, Vick! My DH cracks me up by his imagination of prices I'd ask for one dipe! LMBO. It's cute though, I like that he's so fond of the ones I make.

Beckers111,
if you got a machine, just go ahead and try it, it's really not complicated!

Jenn,
I'm sorry your cutie already outgrew the ones you made. I hate when that happens! It's so hard letting the cute dipes go, isn't it!?

MamaStace,
I started out making my first pocket fitteds (and reg. fitteds) from recycled stuff like soft flannel sheets, old tees, and I still use tons of receiving blankets!
For the inner I prefer microfleece which I can sometimes get at our local Walmart fabric section or online from Joanns for a good price. (It's not MM, but almost the same. At least it has the same effect, wicking the moisture away from DS's bum)
I have yet to try hemp, BKT, sherpa and such, but for those I joined a couple of yahoo groups of sewing mamas. (PM me if you're interested in the links)
Oh, and for the closure (aplix or touchtape) I order through DiaperShop.com.

As for stuffing, I've got lots of microfiber towels I use. I plan on venturing out though through the yahoo group orders I've got coming.

Lovencloth,
thanks for the advice! I try to sell more and more bought fitteds in order to use my own made. But I can def. see how it can happen easily that you make dipes for everyone else but for your own suddenly!

TaivensMama,
you just got me the idea to make some tiny doll dipes for DD's dolls!!! I always hate when she says "Oh, another dipe for Mason?" so this way I can make some cute ones for 'her' too!

As to your question re the serger, no, I don't have one. Right now I couldn't afford one and am happy with T&T, but I'm sure once I'd try one, I wouldn't want to go back probably! LOL Maybe in the future, together with a snap press!

Heather,
that's so sweet that you're making your bro's baby dipes!!! You gotta take a pic of those cute NB dipes!

Melissa,
I understand! I have yet to try one of your dipes aswell!

mommy2zander,
that's awesome that you all are making your own dipes! Oooh.. and an embroidery machine as a hand me down!? WOW!!! I'd love that! LOL
You have to show us some pics one day!

Re: Who else makes their own dipes?

I do I do. I started mainly because I liked the "thought" of cloth diapers (before seeing how much they cost!). I bought 3 fb on ebay and the rest are all homemade. I love making them and now want to start a business. I am so proud of my ceations and love seeing how much money I am saving. The prints are just adorable. I KNOW that I have the cutest dipes and wipes in my area (everyone, but one great mama, uses sposies). They are such great conversation pieces as well. Our children are blessed!

I do! I have made both fitteds for both my daughters as well as pfs. Still tweaking both designs and hoping to make an entire new one this weekend! I was using the fernandfaerie recycled design but it just wasn't working for us, even though the dipes are so cute. My youngest has already outgrown the ones I made her.

Re: Who else makes their own dipes?

My 30th birthday was last week and I told dh that I want to buy myself a sewing machine for my birthday. *I* know it would be for diaper making but he would think that's just crazy! I told him if we can get the "office" cleaned up (we moved in almost two years ago and this room is still full of boxes!) and the garage cleaned out, then I'll spend my birthday money on a sewing machine and we can spend our income tax refund to get him a riding lawn mower. So far it sounds like a good plan but neither of us are making much progress!

Anyway, I did make DJ a pair of wool shorts last week and I totally know what you mean...there is something so rewarding about seeing your baby wearing something you've made...even if it's not perfect. As soon as I finished that pair of shorts, I started on a pair of longies (and dh doesn't know that I already have two more kinds of yarn to make some more for DJ and the new baby!!)

So it's not just you!

Re: Who else makes their own dipes?

I did, before I started selling. We had fit and night time issues that I couldn't spend tons of money "trying out" things to fix. I knew what I needed and did it. Then I decided to sell and had to invest in a serger and snap press, but (and I know I am biased) I still comment on how cute my little M looks in her Little M's. I have thought about making them my only diaper, but now it is like, well I could make her a dipe, and it costs me less, but it also costs me profit, so it is the same as just buying other wahm's dipes, only I don't have to spend the time. I would suggest, if you think you will want a whole stash of your own, do it before you sell. You go into it thinking, oh, I can make a diaper any time I want for dc, and what happens is, you make tons of dipes for everyone else and none for your own!
