Relactating Where to begin ,lol. Need suggestions!!
K ladies , When ds was born I started out nursing (nursed successfully with ds #1) Well *sigh* He was having colic issues ... so under docs advice I started supplimenting with formula ... which made him worse .. long story short ... I dried up and ds started drinking nutramigen
Well now he is breaking out in Ecezema (sp.) and is refusing his bottles and losing weight !! The doc isn't helpful at all ... I should have never stopped bfing !!!! We stopped at 4 mons and ds is now 7. I still "Leak" when I take hot showers and such ... is there any way that I can relactate and get things going again?? I've heard of people who adopt and can bf so I know this is possible (and of course I just gave my pump away) Have any of you gone through this and what worked for you ??? Thanks for your time Mamas!!!

Re: Relactating Where to begin ,lol. Need suggestions!!
I have never relactated but can give you some links on relacation. It is possible to relacated. The longer it's been since you nursed, the harder it will be.
If you want to give it a try, you will need a good double electric pump. The best option is a hospital grade pump but if you can get your hands on a Medela Pump in Style, it would work as well. Start pumping like crazy. I would pump at least every 3 hours. You should probably take some type of herbal supplement like fenugreek to try and kick start your supply. Don't be discouraged if you don't get a ton of milk the first few days. It will take some time to build your supply. You may never be able to regain a full supply, or you may be able to. Even if you can't regain a full supply, any bm your baby gets it great. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/adopt/index.html

Yes, Domperidone has to be prescribed by a doctor...and to complicate things even more, it is illegal in the US. Check this out: http://www.diaperswappers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8889 There are some links in that thread about relactating...it is difficult but doable and most would say definitely worth the effort! The best advice I've read/heard about reintroducing the breast is to not set your expectations too high and not let yourself get frustrated. I do not have personal experience with relactating, but I did exclusively pump/bottlefeed for the first 7 weeks and had to reintroduce the breast after that so I can sympathize somewhat. I can also give lots of advice about getting a bottle baby to take the breast!! Good luck!! |
