Re: Pack your bags!

What clothes did you pack? Did you really need to bring your own nightgown? I packed my own nightgown, but never used it. I was bleedign so heavy I didn't want to stain mine.
- Did you bring any "specials"? ( music, pics of family, etc) I didn't bring any of the things youlisted, but I wish I would have brought movies and music.
- How many "granny panties" did you bring along? Did you bring your own PP pads or just use the ones from the hospital? I brought three pairs of panties and only wore one - and that was home. I wore the hospital ones when I was there. i brought a whole pack of pads , but didn't use them until I got home. Those big diapers the hospital gives you work the best right after having the baby!! LOL
- What clothes did you bring along to bring home your little baby? How many outfits? Did you have a special "Coming home" outfit? (this is a hot debate in my family... ) Mia was born in December so for me I just brought sweats. I knew they would be comfy and fit no matter what size I ended up after having her. For Mia I brought two outfits cause when I had Sam I only brought one and he spit up all over it. I also brought extra blankets for Mia cause it was cold.
- Did you bring your own pump just in case? OUr hospital will "give" you the tubes to use their Medelas... and then the parts can be made into a manual pump... but I already have an Isis.. so I"d rather not have that little gift on my insurance. I didn't pump unti after the hospital so I didn't use any.
- Anything else I'm not thinking of.. I'm sure there are lots! Snackies - you will get hungry in between meals, suckers for while ytou are in labor - they help keep your mouth wet, extra socks - thier floors are dirtier than you think

Good luck!! Can't wait to see pics when your baby arrives

Re: Pack your bags!

I asked the nurses about bringing my own pump and they seemed okay with the idea-- if I have one of my own--then why be billed on insurance for ANOTHER one?? IT's an Avent Isis.. so it's not like it's an obscure pump or anything I'm all for doing breastfeeding at the hospital...and odds are I won't have any kind of supply yet while I'm there.. but I'd rather just bring it and not worry about that!!

As for entertainment AFTER birth---I cannot WAIT for that part! ALthough visitors.. that's a whole 'nother pile of manure.. we're having to FIGHT my MIL to stay the heck out of my delivery suite. I just want myself and my husband there. And I refuse to have her in there while I nurse. Hmph. I'll let the nurses be the bad guy/ crowd controllers.

Re: Pack your bags!

Oh if you get a good nurse it's fun to watch them fight them off, LOL!!! I saw someone else mentioned pics and forgot to say something about that. Are you doing lamaze or anything where you would want a focal point? I brought my son's (or one) ultrasound pic in a frame and put it in a table and used it as my focal point for labor. Other than that, we didn't bring anything along those lines - I felt like I would forget them!
I know how you feel about the MIL part - we just didn't tell them we were going into the hospital. They just got called (I think DH called them first, though) after ds was born. Get a sign to put on the door for when you're nursing or just don't want her in there - if DH tells her what it means (not to come in) then maybe she'd listen, LOL.

Re: Pack your bags!

I could not live with out my shower stuff, blow dryer, hair thing, my own pads ( the ones at the hospital were really thick and hurt to sit on ) I am also glad I brought a little make up and some pj pants and maternity shirts and a nursing bra and tank to wear while I was there because I hated wearing the hospital gown. As for the pump, you really dont need it since it will take up to a week to get your milk in and so instead of giving a paci or anything just nurse, they dont nurse for very long in the very beginning so its best not to introduce anything that will screw up your brand new nursing relationship. But it is good to get the tubing from the hospital anyways because that stuff can be costly and if you can get it then - all the better! Congrats on the upcoming delivery! In a way I am very jealous but we still have a few years to go before we take that on again!

Oh and for the baby, I brought a blanket and the carseat and a couple of diapers I wound up not needing and an outfit with sock and a onsie.

I brought a nightgown and wore it the second day (it was dark colored and didnt stain at all but then again i changed the pad all the time) and i brought and outfit that was bigger to wear home but i just wore home what i wore in....stretchy pants and a t-shirt i lost 14 lbs in the hospital and when i went there they couldnt tell who was there to get induced lol so i didnt need the bigger clothes lol
- Did you bring any "specials"? i think i might have but didnt use it
- How many "granny panties" did you bring along? I brought a couple pairs but the mesh hospital ones are sooooo comfy i wish i could have bought more lol and i didnt bring any pads
- What clothes did you bring along to bring home your little baby? How many outfits? I brought i think one outfit and my aunt bought me preemie sized outfits for her so i used on outfit from my aunt for pictures and another to bring home

Re: Pack your bags!

I just finished packing the other day (36 weeks) and one thing that everyone forgot to mention is your OWN TOLIET PAPER!! or even the flushable wipes!! I can't stand wiping with sand paper.

I also packed a medium size notebook (with several pens) to write down who my nurses were, what room I was in, times when things happened, visitors and their gifts, and other misc notes.

Worried about visitors? Last time my husband printed off a sign that read "Please no visitors between 2pm-4pm". We taped it on the door and it worked. Make sure you both sign it so they don't think it's some regular hospital sign and let your friends and family know ahead of time. This time was "our time" and mostly all we did was nap. You will find that with your first the visitors are non-stop and overwhelming. NEVER be afraid to ask someone to leave or come back including your own family.

About the nursing thing infront of your MIL...well, lets say my FIL walked in without knocking while the lactation consultant had my boob in her hand trying to get Elise to nurse. I don't know who was more embarrassed! Needless to say, he learned to knock real quick! But after my 3rd day (c-section) I started to feel comfortable nursing pretty much infront of anyone.

And yes don't forget your own pillows, unless you like the saran wrap ones at the hospital.

Good luck!

Re: Pack your bags!

The thing I was most glad to have with me was a nursing top/gown.

At the hospital where I delivered ds#2, their hospital gowns had no nursing openings When the nurses were teasing that I didn't like their gowns, I made sure to mention that that was the reason...
