I feel like poo, could it be breastfeeding related?

This exact thing happened 2 weeks ago when my DS came home from the NICU. It starts with one of my breasts hurting like it is bruised, I can't even touch it. Then my body starts aching, have a headache, and my backs hurts right at the bottom of my ribs. I am also freezing, but no fever. This coincides exactly with my breasts hurting, then feeling better. Last time it lasted 3 days. The last day I took a long soak in the tub and slept for most of the day, then started feeling better. I don't think it is lack of sleep, because I have been getting enough sleep and I don't think it is mastitis, I just feel like poo. Has anyone else felt like this?

ETA: I bf'd my DS until he was 1 and never felt like this. I am thinking it could possibly be due to overproduction. My baby was in the NICU and I pumped in the night for the 2 weeks. Last time I felt like this, the pain started at the time I would have been pumping and in 1 pumping session I was pumping enough for 3, sometimes 4 feedings.

It does sound like mastitis to me, you may want to check with a doctor!

Hmmm, I checked Dr. Sears' website and I do have most of the symptoms. I didn't think that's what it is because my breasts aren't red and I don't have a fever. I think I'll call tomorrow, would I call my midwife or Dr.?

Just keep on nursing and pumping. I have had mastitis 6 or so times but only needed a dr and antbx once and it was b/c I didn't know what hit me until it was too late. I try and avoid antbx b/c if the risk of getting thrush- we're dealing with that now and it is not fun.

Yep- definitely sounds like mastitis to me. nurse as much as you can, drink a ton of water and massage with warm compresses. You don't have to take antibiotics necessarily, sometimes you can fight it off without. For me last time, fortunately it was a saturday night the pain started and i was feeling dizzy and like I had cold chills. So DH helped out and I spent the next day on the couch nursing and just resting, and it was better by the next morning.

Well, it is mastitis. I had a temp of 102 through the night and this morning, so I called my midwife. She gave me a prescription and hopefully I'll start to feel better soon.

Re: I feel like poo, could it be breastfeeding related?

I'm glad you got it taken care off. It bites! I've gotten in several times. But, I only needed meds the first time. Now I know what it is, I have been able to head it off each time before it good too bad. I get the exact symptoms you are talking about. I do start to run a low grade fever pretty early on though. But, I've only had the red breasts a time or two. Most of the time, it's just sore. If I let it go or don't notice, it will turn red and get hot. Now you know, you can avoid the meds by nursing/pumping like crazy, warm compresses, and message. Hopefully, you'll never get it again though.
