Karo syrup in every bottle?

My cousin has a 7 week old baby. She breastfed him for a couple of weeks and then switched to formula and she says he has been constipated ever since. She just texted me this am because he hasn't gone #2 since Sunday and asked what to do. She says they have switched formula twice and she has been putting Karo in every bottle for a month! I honestly don't know what to tell her without sounding like I am pushing my beliefs on how to feed babies on her. I breastfed mine for at least 8 months before starting solids or anything with a handful of formula feeds for my dd when I didn't pump enough to send to daycare so I honestly don't really have any experience with what she is asking me. Any advice?

Prune juice?
I would tell her you are not the person to ask, as you have no experience in this area. My mom used to tell me to put karo in Toby's bottles, but I was always afraid to. Something about it didn't sit well with me.

I told her I would try prune juice before karo syrup. And I did tell her I have never had to deal with this so I didn't know what to tell her. I couldn't put karo in an infants bottle either but didn't tell her that she feels bad enough as it is. She is going to take him to see the ped she said he has been crying a lot and acting like his belly hurts. Thanks mama!

I used Karo a lot with my now 4 year old. he had a lot of problems with constipation and it did seem to help a little. She shouldn't have to be using it in every bottle though. If he is that constipated he needs to probably switch formula. He for sure should take him back in to see the ped....or at least that's my 2c. Either way I hope the sweet little angel gets better. That can not be a fun way to spend his days

She said the Karo helped at first and they have switched formulas twice already. How often and what consistency should the poo be in a ff baby? I ff ds1 after a few months but that was 9 years ago and I honestly don't remember.

First of all, she should not be using Karo every single bottle. That can be really hard on baby's digestive system! Secondly, bottle fed babies do not poop as often as breastfed babies and often people assume that means they are constipated when they may not be. I think typical is once a day or thereabouts and it will be firmer too, more like mashed potatoes (someone correct me if I'm wrong there...).

Sometimes it takes 3, 4, or 9 different formulas before you find the right one that works for your baby so I'd definitely suggest that she keep trying others out.

Re: Karo syrup in every bottle?

A friend of mine had a DS with a constricted bowel and, in addition to actual treatement of the bowel, they put Mirilax in most bottles for his first year, and in his evening milk for his second year. That was at the recommendation of a GI specialist though.

Re: Karo syrup in every bottle?

I used a lot of dark kyro syrup with my FF DD. She was constipated and crying and straining a lot. When she got old enough for solids we started out with prunes as one of her first foods. Formula was just really hard on her system. She ended up using a lot of mylicon as she was extremely gassy as well. When she was old enough to drink juice we did apple to help as well. Formula is just so bulky in their system, it just sucks that your friend's baby is so little.

Hopefully she will find a formula that doesn't bulk up the baby poo so much.

Re: Karo syrup in every bottle?

We switched to Similac Advanced with my ds and it helped, but he was still rather constipated until he was switched to whole milk. No help I know...we did prune juice in his bottles and switched formula several times but nothing really helped.

After all of that, if I decide to wean my dd before a year, I'll be pumping. Its just not worth the pain for her (fyi, I weaned due to bad biting at 9 months...I couldn't take the pain anymore!!)
