Re: When did you know your child would be a thumb sucker?

I have no clue, my ds is 9 months old and likes to chew on his. My dd was a paci baby and thankfully self weaned herself at 8 months. Everyone is blown away by that, but she was a little over 8 months old and we tired to give her her paci one day and she just wouldn't take it. I tried for weeks because she loved to nurse and used me as a paci a lot, but she just didn't want it. We gave up and threw them all away lol.

DS, never took a paci, never showed interest in his thumbs much at all. He would suck his fist, but now its chewing on his thumb. lol.

I have an aunt with 2 daughters who sucked there thumbs. One was 12 and the other was 10 when they stopped sucking there thumb. Thats crazy and its caused some dental issues.

Re: When did you know your child would be a thumb sucker?

I knew DS3 was a thumb sucker when he was sucking his thumb hours-old. He was crazy about his thumbs until he started solids at 7 months. Now he very rarely has his thumb in his mouth. Now his comfort preference is for holding my fingers while he nurses to sleep.

My older boys were comfort nursers and didn't suck their thumbs or pacis.

This is why I never pushed a paci - too much hassle! That and when DS1 was a few weeks old and I HAD been trying to use a paci, I figured out one day that I had put the poor kid off from nursing for 6 hours! That was when I officially refused to ever use a paci again! DS2 did get a paci in the NICU, but he didn't use it after he came home.

Stoping giving your LO the paci and he will only have the option to use his hand/thumb

I've had 2 paci kids and it sucks! (pardon the pun) I'm so hoping this one will find a finger, but she's months and still trying, so not sure. She uses a paci, but begrudgingly.

Re: When did you know your child would be a thumb sucker?

Both my boys spit the paci out as soon as they could, and went for their thumbs. I have a picture of DS1 sucking his thumb in utero.
Don't worry about what people tell you. The same ones who pushed the paci, saying pacis are easier to get rid of, refuse to take the paci away from the three year old with chapped lips and dental issues. A woman I went to church with had a DD right after ODS was born, and was horrified that I let him suck his thumb. The kids are 2.5 now, and DS stopped sucking his thumb a year ago. Guess who talks around the paci still wedged firmly in her mouth?

Re: When did you know your child would be a thumb sucker?

We knew when she stuck her thumb in her mouth and started sucking. She started it suddenly and stopped it suddenly a month or two later. This was DD#2. The other two wouldn't suck anything but me and oh how we tried to get DD#1 to suck a pacifier, her thumb, anything! But to no avail. Other than those several weeks of DD#2 sucking her thumb nobody sucked anything but me.

Neither of my kids would take a paci (though I certainly tried to get them to) but ds found his thumb around three months and he's sucked it ever since (he's eight months now).
