Boys and hair length, what do you do?

There's a small debate going on between DH and myself about letting our boys choose to wear their hair long. He says that since the girls get to wear theirs how they want to, the boys should be able to as well. I have a hard time with this, probably because of the conservative way I grew up. Boys just didn't have long scraggly hair in the environment my parents kept us in, and I personally like a neat cut now (granted I've dated my small share of long haired guys, but that was back in my early 20's and dating the bass player of a wannabe punk/metal band). My oldest DSS likes his hair short, thank goodness, but my two middle boys (12 and 9) want to grow their hair out. I can't stand the way it grows out above their ears, like their going to take flight or something. On top of that (and I love the kid, but I'm being painfully honest) my 12 yo DSS has a HUGE head and it's a bit flat in the back, so longish hair just kind of makes his head look even bigger, kwim??? I can't come out and say "So and So, your head is HUMONGOUS and you wouldn't look right with the Shaggy hair cut like all the other little boys at school" that would just break his heart. But what do I do?? Do you let your boys choose how they wear their hair?? (ok and please no flaming, just being honest)

DS would look fantastic with long hair, he has a lot of body and waves to it and I would love a shoulder length for him, he's not into the longer hair though. When it starts growing out he asks to go get it cut. I let my boys decide what to do with their hair.

They're at an age where they need a little room in making little decisions on how to cut they're hair. Don't get me wrong, I HATE long hair on guys and that was the "in" thing when I was in high school...but you have to let them learn and grow

Re: Boys and hair length, what do you do?

I may be in the minority, but I don't cut my kids hair unless they ask me to. When ds was tiny I used to cut his hair, and he would scream and cry and vomit. It was unbearable. You would have thought we were pulling his hair out not just trimming it. It never occured to me that it actually hurt him. Now that we know he has SPD I know that it actually causes him physical pain to have his hair cut. So his hair is now all the way down his back and absolutely gorgeous. When and if he asks for a haircut we will get it done. If I even suggest it he very adamently says no. With ds2 we won't cut his hair until he asks us to, though we may do just a tiny bit of evening out. I think it is their hair and they can decide how to wear it. My only rule is that if they want long hair it has to be taken care of. At your boys age they can do that themselves. I dont' believe in making decisions of this nature about another persons body, even if they are my kids.

And of course here are some pics of ds. Just cause I love to show him off.

I like Kye's hair long. We decided to cut it when I got tired of the little girl comments. He did look a little girlish. We also cut it when we noticed his scalp was very dry and we treated that. My MIL has taken him for cuts twice but I make sure he wants to. I would love him with long hair.

Your DS has beautiful hair! Do you ever get the little girl comments?

Thank you, we do get the little girl comments. But you know even when he had short hair people thought he was a girl. I think it is his features, they are very small like mine. One woman my mom works with said he looks like Snow White. Sometimes people will actually argue with me when I tell them he is a boy.

I let my kids choose their hair style and length to a certain extent. I wouldn't want them being mistaken for the opposite sex, although I do try to allow them some freedoms.

I like short hair on boys (though DH had long hair back in the day and my dad had long hair until I was in college).

But, I think at 12 and 9, if they really argued I would probably let them grow it out.
