Re: For the Love of Reading Group July 26-August 1

I feel bad, I haven't even been to the library since they totally renovated the building several years ago. I always say I'm going to take the kids but the thought of Tharen in a library sort of scares me. I can't drive anyway so it would have to be a weekend when dh can take us. I wouldn't mind walking there when the weather is nice, but it is several miles and busy roads so I am a bit leery about doing it with the kids. I'll give it some thought though, for when fall finally gets here and it is under 100 each day. My problem with libraries is that I get so attached to books. I want to own them all. I used to get frustrated as a child because I would fall in love with a book only to discover it was out of print and impossible to get. Sure I could keep checking out the library copy, until some one lost or destroyed it, but it isn't the same. My friend lent me the majority of her books and manga when she was getting ready to move (at least partially so she didn't have to move it I am sure). Most of her books are more Teen lit stuff and I am having a hard time even getting interested enough to read them but with the manga I have wound up buying copies of about half of them for myself. I do like being able to read before I buy to know I will really like something but really I have only ever been disappointed enough to sell about 10 mangas, and I own hundreds. It is like reading the scanlations online (which I love to do), I like finding out if I like a story or even a mangaka's style before buying any of it, but unfortunately with many scanlations the mangas are either not available in English or have been out of print for years and are impossible to get. I've discovered several mangaka's that I love this way only to find that I cannot buy any of their work here in the US.

On my goals, since finishing Ai No Kusabi (or at least as much as I could get of it) I decided to take on something a bit lighter. I read 300 pages of Togainu No Chi doujinshi the other night and really enjoyed it. This is my second time through these particular fanfic/scanlations. Then yesterday I read Embracing Love Vol 4 from Youka Nitta. She is one of my favorite mangaka's and Embracing Love was probably my favorite OAV of all time. Unfortunately her work is extremely hard to come by here in the US. Be Beautiful that used to publish her stuff went out of business so all of Casino Lilly and Embracing Love are out of print. Her work is so popular among yaoi fans that they are ridiculously priced on the second hand market. I was lucky to snag this one for cover price at Akon in June. I keep hoping some of the others will turn up for a decent price on Amazon or I will find them at Half Price books. But no luck so far. I just picked up the copy of Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan that my friend lent me. I am 88 pages in now. It is a super easy/light read but sort of cute. Definitely not a great work of literature by any stretch. It's kind of like a romantic comedy, amusing, sweet and may even give you something to think about here and there, but your world isn't a different place for having read it. Still it is a nice change of pace anyway. So far I am at 1401 pages total in 2 weeks of reading.

On goal number 2 we have completed Howliday Inn and The Celery Stalks at midnight and are now 40 pages in to Nighty Nightmare. I do love the Bunnicula series, it is so funny. The boys are loving it. They always beg for "Just one more chapter" at bedtime. When we finish all of the James Howe books we own we will go back to Harry Potter. I would love to get the kids through the entire series before the movie comes out but I don't think we have enough time. We are going to try though. I would like to reread the series before the movie comes out. On Goal 2 we have read 351 pages in 2 weeks.

For goal 3 Kearnan did not read at all out loud yesterday. He had to go get some blood work and a bone age scan done so we wound up skipping reading time. We will give it a try today though.
