Could the water softener be the problem?

Since I have moved to a home wiht a woter softening system my dipes smell once they get peed on. My washing regime has not changed. It is an icky smell but NOT ammonia and I am clueless how to get rid of it. I soaked one dipe in bakingsoda this mrn to see if there was a diference thinking it was just that dipe but Frnaces just peed while on my lap and was wearing a prefold and wool--the smell was the same and really unpleasant. Any chemists that know something I don't?

Not a chemist but I do think you may need to change your routine around some till something works better. Can you turn off the water softening system for a bit to see if that helps?

Re: Could the water softener be the problem?

I have a water softner. I got that same stink with my microfiber inserts. My prefolds are ok though. Had to boil the microfiber every now and again. My AIO's seem fine too.

At first I thought it was the Era I was using as it wasn't recommended for my dipes and I was using way too much. Turned out to be the "problem" with microfiber. Lots of mamas have the same problem.

Go there and see if your detergent is recommended for your type of dipes. Could be build up of wrong detergant and the water softner.

Water softners make you feel like you haven't gotten all the soap out of your hair, kwim? Wonder if it prevents things from rinsing clean enough on clothes/diapers?

Re: Could the water softener be the problem?

Have you tried stripping your dipes? We have a softener we installed this spring because our water was off the charts hard. With a good softener system you shouldn't be using more than 1/2 the recommended amount of detergent (washing machine & dishwasher). I use about 1/3 the soap I used to. Everything is sparkly clean now
