Baby Massage and lotions??

So many questions tonight-- sorry about that...I also want to start baby massage with my little girly- Can I use lotions? The doctor had told me at one time that we can't use lotions on her- but that was when she was really little- We never were told when we could start using lotions. Can I use a lotion for massage? Can I use sunblock on her now? Thanks so much- any brand suggestions? Also suggestions on how to do baby massage? thanks!

I take dd to an infant massage class/ group and she recommends grape seed oil for massage. There are a lot of good books out there for infant massage. You can also look around for a class. I found mine through the Parent/Child Classes of my local hospital (like the people who do child birth classes).

Best of luck, its great bonding experience. Its so funny to watch all the babies doze off as we massage them.

Coconut oil is great too or just regular baby oil. Now, I use body butter to massage both my DDs before bed time. It helps them relax. I wish I have someone to massage me everyday

So is it ok to use lotions on a 5 month old? I would like to occasionally use sunscreen on her also- so just needing to know about the lotion...

I like jojoba oil for little ones - especially good if they have dry skin. I think most "kids" sunblock usually says 6 mths. and up, so that's when we started. My massage therapist gave occasional classes in infant massage at our local birth center. Even before I started using our birth center for gyn. stuff, I would call them for recommendations on classes, pediatricians, etc. If you have someplace like that nearby, or a La Leche League, they can be great resources.

You could use any light oil as a massage oil. I prefer natural oils to baby oil. I never used sunscreen on a baby under 6 months - just kept them in the shade and wearing a hat at all times.

There's a great book called Infant Massage, the author's last name is McClure. My babies loved their after-bath massage, it's so relaxing and the oils are good for their skin. I would avoid mineral oil. Grapeseed and jojoba are great.
Sunscreen I would wait until 6 months +.
