I was going to say that too. Actually, there was a thread on here before about the dangers of going coverless with a snappi. Those things can snap and hurt your dc.
We go coverless with a pf and pins all the time. How damp it will get depends on the fold and how long you let them go with it I guess. Jelly roll will get damp right away in the front for us (girl pee ). The Angel fold usually holds her over longer.

I do prefolds coverless sometimes around the house, and I just change it very frequently - every 45 minutes to an hour - and we're fine, no leaks! It just gets damp. I would use a snappi though. I have a hard time pinning it tight enough, but the snappi keeps it snug.
