Too big?

so dd went for her first check up, she's five weeks old tomorrow and her PED tells me she's too big lol, not that I can really do anything about it seeing as she's not over eating I just have big kids! my first dd is the same way at the high end of the growth chart! So can they actually be too big? I always feel self-concious taking my dd's to the doctor cause he always says they're too big and then we go over the feeding schedual to find that she eats normally. she's 11lbs 4oz. with my first dd she's tiny now, she was a chubby baby but once she learned to walk all her baby fat left. If he wasn't the best PED in the city I'd look for another one lol.

Re: Too big?

I'd ignore him, especially since your other child was the same way. A 5week old can't be overweight and as long as you are not overfeeding(and it sounds like you aren't) then there is nothing to be concerned about.

My kids are at the opposite end of the scale, too small. IMO since they come up with these "magical averages" that the dr's prefer they need to have people at the bigger and smaller end. That's my kids, we generally don't do what everyone else is.lol

Re: Too big?

I would relax and do not worry about that kind of comment, even though it`s coming from an authority /professional health figure.

I don`t see how your kid can be too big with those numbers. As long as your babies are growing normally and are healthy. If you had a 6 pounders at birth that is now a 16 pounders on a 20 inches frame at 5 weeks, I`d worry about it but that is not the case. Average numbers are what they are : an average of all babies, small, lean, tall, chubby, taking 2 pounds in a month, taking 1 , taking 3 ... an average.

My two kids never went below the 90% of the curb and never, ever, had anyone told me they were too big as they follow their growth steadily.

Re: Too big?

I wouldnt worry about it. Both my daughters hit the 11 lb mark by their 5 week check up, with reflux no less And im not sure if you're breastfeeding or not, but there are seperate growth charts out there for breastfed and formula fed babies. According to the breastfed growth charts they use in most other countries, both my daughter's growth rates are normal! Good job momma

Re: Too big?

Was he joking? The woman who checks my son calls him a "bruiser" LOL. As far as I'm concerned when they're that young unless there's a health problem the baby is just fine! I would ignore it, too! My family is notorious for making FAT babies - so I readied myself for all those comments but mine came out long and skinny. She looks great to me in that pic, she's adorable! I wouldn't be at all worried about size this young!

Re: Too big?

All 4 of mine were in the 90th+ percentile until about 18 months or so then dropped down towards the 10th+ percentile Go figure They all ate like pigs, still do, and are skinny as rails so I put very little thought into what the docs say, it's just interesting

Re: Too big?

Yours is too big and I hear that mine's too small! They sent us to all kinds of specialists to rule out problems with him and in the end, its just how my kid is!
If you have big kids, then its fine. Feed your baby when she's hungry, like I'm sure you do and what else can you do? 5 weeks old isn't the time for a crash diet!

Re: Too big?

And that's the best ped. around? It's hard to imagine anyone criticizing the size of a 5 wk old; I sure hope he was joking. Shame on him for not reassuring you. You're doing great.

Re: Too big?

Ignore! At 5 weeks, there is no such thing as fat. My ds was 11-4 at birth, and is just fine.
