Relactating to feed adopted baby??

We are adopting a baby who will probably be between 3-7 months when we get him/her. I want very much to give this new one breast milk...not only because it is the best but because they will probably be undernourished.
Any suggestions/advice whether this will be possible to do when: a) I don't have the baby here to stimulate lactation, and b) bottle feeding will probably be the most successful way (he/she has probably been used to bottle feeding).
I finished bf'ing my youngest son about 9 months ago.

Thanks!!

Re: Relactating to feed adopted baby??

it's very possible!! Chances are that it will take you close to 9 months to rebuild a good supply, but it can come sooner if you really work at it.

You can go two routes from what I know of...

1) use a very strong birth control and domperidone. Stop the BC about a week or two before you are supposed to get baby and PUMP PUMP PUMP! I know that's how most mama's that have a baby via surrogacy do it.

2) Start pumping now. Use a combination of fengreek, domperidone, drink TONS extra water, do whatever you need to in order to start getting that milk flowing again. Chances are this route would work well for you considering you've breastfed before!

and most importantly, get in contact with a lactation consultant! Even a La Leche League leader should be able to help you out considerably.

Congrats on the adoption and best of luck to you in relactating!

There used to be a mommy on here (maybe she still is?) who successfully bf'ed two adopted babes- and was able to stimulate milk production for both, so I know it can be done.
Good Luck!!

i agree with this, also stash that milk you do get pumped out that way *if* by a sad chance the baby does refuse to nurse you can still give them the breastmilk and congrats!

Also you can get a Supplemental Nursing System. Medela makes a great one..that way you can stimulate nursing and can have the closeness of nursing even if you need to supplement...I second the Lactation consultant thing..
