Question for someone that knows Montessori and Unschooling.

Are they basically the same? I mean Montessori schools are for groups of children but they are child directed just like unschooling is for the home right? What are the differences?

Re: Question for someone that knows Montessori and Unschooling.

IMO, Montessori is a method of teaching while unschooling is (or can be) a way of life.

We're semi-unschoolers. I would really like to classify ourselves as only unschoolers, but my DD begs to do book work so I guess we don't really qualify

So you would say that in Montessori children can learn whatever they want in a created environment. But in unschooling they are learning without the boundaries required in a "child care" setting?

Re: Question for someone that knows Montessori and Unschooling.

I think that is a fair statement - I like Montessori and if we ever chose to send our kids to school we would likely send them to a Montessori school, but yes, the environment is catered to children. Everything is child sized, and there are particular materials that are used in the classroom.

With unschooling the child is the one to discover the materials. The parent can offer opportunities, of course, but in my experience it is my child that is leading me and I just provide what she needs.

You might get some more responses if you request this thread to be moved to the homeschooling board.
