nursing, older, pre-TTC and hoping to be here soon

I'm 41, had my first wonderful child last May, and we are still nursing and I have had no sign of the return of AF. I would love to nurse through TTC, but since we are on a tighter schedule due to my age, I'm concerned that I need to start cutting back the nursing now if I want to be ovulating regularly enough in a few months to be able to chart and do some targeted conception efforts (with my first, it took about four months of charting with ovulation sticks (no temps, I was never good at detecting drops) before we conceived). This may be TMI, but we are older and co-sleep and have been married for ten years, so we don't exactly scrump like bunnies anymore and really rely on planning DTD.

I need some encouragement and advice on how to jumpstart my cycles! Are there herbs that might help that wouldn't be dangerous to the nursing relationship? My daughter, at 8 months, is starting to vigorously devour food - so much that she now barely drinks a 4-5 ounce bottle while I am at work (I pump 11-12 ou and she used to drink all of that) and saves all of her nursing for when I get home. We really don't want to end the co-sleeping, but I feel like I have to stop the night nursing to resume cycles. I would like to wait until she's a year, but I'm concerned that if I wait that long it might take another 4-6 months before my cycles are regular enough to have a good shot of trying to conceive.

Any older nursing moms been through this? I'm thinking of starting to cut out the pumping sessions at work (I do 3 right now), even though I know that will effect my nightime supply.

Re: nursing, older, pre-TTC and hoping to be here soon

I am an *older* nursing mom who is also TTC, but am a little younger than you. With 6 kids, my hubby's atypical schedule, and having a toddler, we also have to schedule DTD I got my first PPAF at about 9 months PP. My LP is short due to BFing, but seems to be adding a day each cycle. I'm up to 8DPO as of last cycle!! This is our 5 cycle TTC.

Some mamas nurse round the clock and get PPAF back early. Some mamas only nurse once a day and still don't have PPAF. It just depends on your body.
There are things you can do to help induce ovulation once you do get your first PPAF, and also things to do to help lengthen your LP. I would very much love to get pregnant again quickly, but still nurse my LO on demand (which is 4-6 times a day), co-sleep, and nurse overnight. I'm not willing to take any meds, supplements, or reduce nursing yet. I hope other mamas who have taken supplements, etc. have advice for you on that!!

Good luck mama!! And congrats on your baby girl.
