Re: TTC while BFing GRADS & Greats!!!

I never posted on the other thread but I hope it's okay that i post here....

My name is Kristina - We found out we're expecting #3 this morning. My EDD is September 29th. I am still nursing Sawyer, he is almost 19months (/6/29/09)

Sawyer is a total boobaholic , so I'm hoping it takes awhile for my milk to change over. I didn't BF my first son this long so I have no experience with nursing while pregnant and I'm just trying to educate myself. We're not doing cow's milk over here yet...since he nurses so much still. So I'm wondering if I need to start introducing another type of milk so that we can easily transition once my milk goes? My first doc appointment is scheduled for the 31st

Glad to get to know you all and be able to join in

Re: TTC while BFing GRADS & Greats!!!

Hey all, I'll update the OP when I get a chance. Things have been hectic here

Welcome newcomers!

Kristina---I had to wean my son (mostly) to get pregnant so he only nurses a few times a week. My son is 3 weeks older than your youngest. Since my milk is gone nursing really has been uncomfortable. I'm still deciding if I want to fully wean him before the newb is born.

As for milk, I see no reason to give it if he's still getting at least 24 oz of breastmilk a day. However, you can introduce goats milk, rice milk, soy milk, or whole milk at any time you want. My son mostly just eats yogurt and that fulfills his milk requirement and he eats plenty of calories and fat in his diet so I don't have to worry about what kind of milk I give him if he does decide to drink it (he mostly refuses any milk but mine...he even refuses mine if its not on-tap). So, sometimes I give him whole milk with chocolate powder and perhaps a little sugar in it (not cocoa mix...baking chocolate powder). Sometimes he'll actually drink a sippy of whole or skim milk (whatever I have on hand). Sometimes he just eats 3-4 yogurts a day.

My doc said if he will reliably consume yogurt to let him have that instead and just substitute oz for oz (8oz of milk = 8oz full-calorie yogurt).

Welcome! My DD was born one day before Sawyer (6/28/09). I got pregnant when she was 9 months and nursed throughout the pregnancy. I had a good stretch of time where I had little to no milk (I think this started around 16-20wks of pregnancy), but she would dry nurse. I never transitioned her to another form of milk...not that I didn't try, but she just wouldn't take it. Like the pp, my DD only likes mommy's milk and it has to be from the tap. I am okay with that though because I know she gets enough fat, protein, and calcium from other sources. She is now almost 19 months and still won't drink cows milk. Now that I have had my DS (a week ago) my milk is back in and DD is LOVING it!! Good luck nursing through your pregnancy!

Welcome
We had to start supplementing by week 10 but it was just a little bit at a time so there is not really any reason to start early. Your milk should go away gradually if it is going to go away so just watch your baby Sawyer and if he seems hungry offer him a little of whatever milk you would like. By week 24 or sooner my baby was only dry nursing.

Thanks ladies for the responses. I think we are just going to play it by ear and see what he does.

Any secrets to getting through the pain with a nursing LO? It hurts pretty bad at first but after awhile isn't so bad. I can get through he pain if it means giving him the good for longer.

I used to count to 15 and if it still was hurting he was done and went to side two, if he was on side 2 then he was done and we supplemented right then so he would be happy.

Re: TTC while BFing GRADS & Greats!!!

Hey Mamas.... Long time no talk! I have been pretty calm on the Diaperswapper front, I have been so sick! We are 13 weeks along and the morning sickness is still raging! I was still nursing ds (15 months) when we got preggo, and I think we are officially done. Its been about a week since he had one last go around on each boob. At about 10 weeks I noticed my supply dropping, and he would look at me funny during booby time, so I think it was starting to taste different too.

The transition went well. I was hoping to wean sometime during the pregnancy and I was sure that this kid was going to nurse til he was 10. He was a boob addict. But he has been great. He hasn't even asked in the last week. We got to the point where I couldn't sit there long enough to not throw up, and he was dry sucking so hard because he wanted more. He also wouldn't go to sleep unless he was nursed completely asleep, and since there wasn't much there, he wasn't going to sleep and then it became a huge fight. So all in all, I think we are both content.

I hope everyone else is doing well, and for all your mamas that are preggo with the dry suckers... so sorry. I feel you on that one.

I'm pretty content with our decision to fully wean too. He's asking for it less and less (mostly when he's tired he asks), and he argues less when I tell him no now. Plus the dry-sucking was NOT working for me (and it was causing cramps too, so that worried me). He's almost 20 months, so I don't feel bad about it, although sometimes I feel guilty because I know its best to do it until he's TWO...but I don't think I can go back to doing it regularly again...and its not worth the pain for the minimal benefit of nursing him once a week, you know?

He's still a big fat boy and healthy as a horse and smart!

Speaking of smarts---For those of you with older kids, when did they start counting and learning colors and asking for things in sentences?

He's 19.5 months and counts "one, two, three, FIVE"---he high fives every time he counts to 5 and by the time he gets to what should be 4, he's too excited to wait, haha. Although he randomly counts it right when sitting on the floor doing nothing. And he'll count to 3 for me when he wants me to help him jump off of something because my hubby taught him that when you count to three he gets thrown in the air. Haha. And SOMETIMES he even says A-B-C, so I think he's doing pretty good considering I haven't spent much time at all working on them with him. In fact, I don't think I've helped him with the ABCs at all. but I know my hubby sings the ABC song to him when he puts him down for bed every other night.

I want to start learning shapes and colors and more letters/numbers too. He knows what 3 is when he sees it and knows SOME of his shapes ("angle" for triangle, "kull" for circle, "sware" for square, and oval he sometimes gets---but its hit or miss.

Any tips on helping him learn these in ways that will work with his limited attention span?

Re: TTC while BFing GRADS & Greats!!!

Quick: I don't have a ton of experience w/what kids can and can't do at that age but it sounds like your son is very bright! My daughter at that age was talking in 3 word sentences. She is turning 2 this week and has been using full and gramatically correct sentences for about a month or month and a half? But every one always tells me she is a fast talker (my whole family was). She knows all her colors and has for a few months now...but I worked with her a lot on that. She counts to 3 but can't seem to get past 3 and has been stuck here for months. And just last week she sang the abcs for the first time. Got half way through. I was floored! I sing it a lot but she never said any of it back before then. Anyway, I watch my friend's daughter and by 2 she was saying the whole song perfectly, counting to 10, knew all her shapes and all her colors. I am very impressed to say the least! :-) Anyway, I asked some child hood speech and occupational therapists when they should know colors and letters and they all said before kindegarten - so like 4. So I guess anything before that is considered advanced! But again, I don't have a lot to compare to. I'd say you are doing great though! :-)
