Gall stones, medication and breastfeeding
SIL just found out she has gallstones and the Dr. put her on a medication that will dry her milk up. I guess she will be on it until they do surgery. Anyway, I figured I'd ask and see if anyone knew if there is a medication that would be compatible with breastfeeding, so she could at least call and ask about it. Her baby is only 6 weeks old.

Re: Gall stones, medication and breastfeeding
I had gallstones and didn't take any meds before removal. What is the name of the medication?

Re: Gall stones, medication and breastfeeding
My brother didn't say. He was pretty tired, since I talked to him at about 6 am his time and he had pulled an emergency room night. I'll try to find out. I told him to have her call LLL this morning.

Is it pain medication? I'm confused.

Re: Gall stones, medication and breastfeeding
I also had gallstones and had them and my gallbladder removed. I never had to take meds beforehand and I nursed about 1 hour after my surgery. I think I would have her ask to make sure that she HAS to be on that med.

Re: Gall stones, medication and breastfeeding
I really don't know why she has to have the meds or what it is. My brother didn't say and I didn't know anything about gall stones, so I didn't know what it would be for. I guess she was in a lot of pain last night, so she went in to the ER. My brother just said, they would have to switch to formula because of her drying up. I'll update this thread when I hear something more. I really want to see her succeed since breastfeeding is a big goal of hers. I'd hate to think she quit because of a doctor that was misinformed on medications and breastfeeding!

Re: Gall stones, medication and breastfeeding
Ok, just heard from SIL.....it was a strong pain med. She checked back with her doctor and he prescribed something not as strong that won't affect her supply.

Re: Gall stones, medication and breastfeeding
Yay! Glad to hear! I had so many docs and nurses tell me SO many different things when I had my surgery. It's really hard to know what's the truth and what isn't. Hope all goes well for her!

Re: Gall stones, medication and breastfeeding
My gallbladder is a hot mess full of gall stones and "sludge." (yuckiness, I guess) and the only thing I take for the pain is Ibuprofen, which works just fine. I found out when my daugther was 2wks, after having what felt like a heart attack is described. They recommended I have it removed right then, but I just wasn't comfortable with surgery while she was so little. She is now 10 months, and I have been putting it off this long, just using the Iburofen when it hurts.

I'll let her know about Ibuprofen. She wouldn't have to worry at all with that in her system!
