HOW MUCH WATER YOU NEED

Infants need around 1-1/2 ounces of water per pound per day. So, each day a 20-pound baby needs around 30 ounces of fluids, usually in the form of milk. Breastfed babies don't need any extra water, but a small amount of water is necessary for formula-fed infants. In fact, some pediatricians feel that offering excessive water to infants under one year of age may actually be nutritionally unwise because excess water may fill up baby and replace needed calories.

Adults need half as much water as infants - between 1/2 to 3/4 ounces of water per pound per day, depending on the amount of exercise, heat loss, illness, etc. A 120-pound woman should drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of fluid per day.

Last summer he was a newborn (May 25th '06) so BM only this spring & summer he has been drinking BM and water. He really likes the water and given the heat and the fact that he nurses less now I figure it can't hurt and his pedi agrees.

thanks for all the feedback mamas...and just to update i made bm pops and my 3 month old actually loved it! I am not sure how much he actually got nutrition wise- but it was a good way to cool him off.

even better- my almost 3yr old loved them Although i am not sure why that is such a surprise since when i pump he is constantly trying to steal the milk

BM pops are a great idea! I think I'll make some for my 2 year old and my baby this summer!

But yes, like everyone said, breastmilk alone is just fine for your baby!

That is so cute!

DD was born last May ('06). I live in hot, humid alabama too. She was fine. If we were out and about, I just made sure that I nursed her often and carried around LOTS of water for me. She spent lots of time in her sling just attached last summer. Man I actually am missing those days.
