How to get a thread closed?

I accidentally started a thread which has gotten WAY out of control and gone on long enough. I stopped replying but the thread just won't die. I feel responsible (maybe I shouldn't?) that a question that was bugging me in the middle of the night has turned into something SO ugly and gone on so long. I don't really want to be attached to it anymore - a few people (not many) have seen where the thread headed and have bashed me as I am sure they don't understand it was NEVER my intention to cause such a huge debate. I am sure there are some people who are still enjoying the conversation and I feel bad taking that away from them BUT I still don't want to be attached to something with so many very nasty comments. Can it be closed, deleted, locked? OR should just let it go, am I being over-sensitive?

If you go to the thread and flag the post with the little red triangle a mod can read it over and decide if it needs to go.

And people should not be 'bashing' you either. If members are harassing you through PM make sure to flag it for a mod. That kind of behavior is ridiculous
