"Just Hyperlexic" - Now what?

We had our developmental evaluation today with EI for our 2.5 yr old son. His motor skills were great, as were adaptive skills, his social skills were "borderline", and then his language was expressive better than receptive, averaging out at "average."

So because of that he isn't eligible for EI services. So what do we do now? When I asked the evaluator, she said preschool would be great for him (though we want to homeschool) and just keep an eye on things. Is it really that simple?

I feel like everyone just thinks I'm an overreactive parent and that my FIL will now rejoice - "see? I told you he's just smart!"

All my kids would probably fail the social skills part because they aren't comfortable with anyone they don't know. As for speech I tend to think that boys generally take longer to develop in this area because they advance in their physical.
ds1 didn't talking in sentences or even that much until after he was 3. No he's almost 7 and never shuts up My kids all still don't have good social skill, but neither do I

If you plan to homeschool maybe engage in some more homeschool activities with other kids around his age. Play dates ect..

Just finished it! I'm also reading Reading Too Soon.

Without another diagnosis or referrals for any therapies or anything, I'm feeling a little bit lost still.

Do you have insurance? You may want to look into getting him evaluated independently. When DS was evaluated by EI, they didn't see any need for OT. When we had DS evaluated by a child development team, they all saw a need for OT, so we took him to a private center where he received OT 2x a week. At first we paid out of pocket, but then insurance picked it up.

We have insurance, but it's private insurance and has a high deductible. I've thought about seeing if the local research hospital might have some kind of program where their speech-language pathologist students do lab hours or something. I don't mind paying (within reason). The SLP we talked to yesterday never said anything about us needing to pursue it though.
