Would you consider adopting...

an older teen? About to age out of the foster care system and has a newborn baby? We have other young kids at home too - ages 5 & under. And we are not an 'old' couple by any means...I just can't get this one out of my head and heart. I don't want to share any more b/c I'm not sure what I can share right now...I don't even know if they timing will work out...

But, would you consider it?

Yes, we had considering fostering for a situation like that...we just weren't able to commit to all the visitations, in- & out-of-home services, etc., etc., which wouldn't be the same in an adoptive situation. It really ripped both of us up, though, as we felt like [outside of the timing] that it would be a perfect placement for us.

I would love to! I would just take them into my home if I could, I hate the adoption process. It would also depend on the situation the teen was in.

If DH and I were older, I would.

I was in CPS as a young teen and stay in touch with my older foster sisters. Someone wanting us to be apart of their family would of been a huge blessing.

If we had an extra room, yes we would. It's very upsetting to me that pregnant teens and teens with children have even less of a chance of being adopted. We only have one extra room though, and can't move for two years. At that point we are going to talk about it again. No one should age out of the system without a family, especially when they want one.

Re: Would you consider adopting...

Thanks ladies, you helped confirm the thoughts and feelings I've had about this. I'm not sure at this point if the timing will work out. We are still taking the classes to get approved, but they don't last too long. I'm asking the lady we are dealing with if there is anything we can do to speed along our part of the process so that we could open our home to her before she gets 'too old' to be adopted...I'm praying deeply that God will work a miracle and in the meantime I'm waiting and allowing our home to be open to the possibility...

It breaks my heart too that there are teens (WOW - yes, teenagers) who age out of the system at such a young age - what would I have done at that age without my family?

Thanks for sharing...

if she enrolls in college she would not age out of the system. My sister was in Foster care until the age of 23 and she had a baby. I was emancipated from DSS at 17 when I went to army boot camp.

We sure would! We actually just opened the idea of adopting a teenager. We have the room, time and energy! Wishing you luck!
