Asking for promotion?
So tonight at work I found out there is a day position opened, it's a higher job then I'm at now(not crazy higher, I work in the NICU and it's more a desk job, less patient care, more paperwork/dealing with Drs), and pays more. It hasn't been listed yet as available.
I want it. ![]() Right now I work nights and this would switch me to days. What do I do? Is it appropriate to email my manager? I never/rarely see him since he works days, but I feel comfortable talking to him. Is it appropriate to ask about an open position thats not listed yet? (the person was just let go) I think I could say that I am interested in switching to a day position if anything opens up and maybe not specfically mention the job I know it open? Oh goodness, I know it might not happen but gosh it would be so awesome!

Re: Asking for promotion?
That's a good idea. Maybe give it a couple of days though, since he may or may not have someone else in mind already, just so you don't seem over zealous.

Re: Asking for promotion?
I'd totally let him know that you want to be considered for the position. And I'd be specific and let him know you'd like to switch to days. If your manager was a woman, I'd say something different, but men like it when people are specific and go after things they want.

I agree with previous poster, don't beat around the bush. And I also think it is GOOD to be overzealous. Most companies prefer to promote from within, and having a passion about something for whatever reason is a positive thing in a job.
If you know what you want, then be willing to say that is what you want, specifically. people in general have a hard time saying no to people who specifically say they want something and ask for it. They will say no, but they don't like to. Stating what you want and asking for it can take you far

There is no harm in asking. If you don't ask, it will always be a no.
