have you had mastitis?

What did you do for self treatment? / When did you go to the dr?

Re: have you had mastitis?

I DID! For two agonizingly painful months! I went to the Dr. when my breast was hot, red, lumpy and had a continuous fever over 101 for three days. They gave me antibiotics and suggested that I rest and nurse as often as possible and be sure to empty the breast entirely. Unfortunately my DD was 17 months at this point and only nursed for comfort and to go to sleep and never emptied the breast since she had a hard time latching on because of the swelling. I couldn't manually express enough to empty, and the pump wouldn't get anywhere near my nipple because it was so swollen.

I was written off of work for the better part of two weeks, I had three ultrasounds, a number of physical exams in the dr's office. I had my dosage increased, the meds switched to a super broad spectrum Clindamycin that made me sick for months. The ONLY way I managed to get rid of the infection was a combination of the high dose clindamycin and weaning at the suggestion of the surgeon I was sent to. He was "the boob guy" so I trusted him. It did work but it was disappointing

My best suggestion is to treat it quickly and aggressively. I was threatened with surgery because the antibiotics dosage was not strong enough in the beginning. Thankfully I did not have to have it. Best of luck!

Re: have you had mastitis?

pumped through the pain for extended lengths of time every couple of hours and it went away on its own after 2-3 days each time.

Re: have you had mastitis?

If you pumped on the infected side did you give that to baby in a bottle? Or only feed baby on the good side? I am worried about creating oversupply. Same with how long to pump?
(My baby was tongue tied and couldn't nurse so he was exclusively bottle fed pumped breastmilk for the first two months and I created a huge oversupply that had to go down when he finally learned to nurse.

Re: have you had mastitis?

I've had it twice in the last two months. The first time I went to bed with the baby and nursed, nursed, nurse. It actually felt good for him to nurse. It cleared up on its own. The second time, I immediately went to the doctor to get antibiotics. I had been told that if it returned, aggressive treatment would be necessary so I didn't mess around. The second time was worse, and took longer to clear up, even with the medicine. I would suggest lots of nursing and rest and get to the doctor to get antibiotics as quickly as possible.

I did give it to baby. I was unable to nurse, so he got all the breastmilk I could get pumped (I think I have IGT). Oversupply was never a concern for me, and probably wouldn't be for most people unless you kept it up for awhile.

I didn't have an issue the second time I got it. I think it may have lasted a day longer, but I just pumped through it, very very often. Same side the second time too.

Re: have you had mastitis?

The first time I got it I pumped as much as I could, hand expressed inbetween. She wouldnt eat from that side cause it tasted funny. I did castor oil massage, then a flax filled heat pack for 10 minutes, then pump with agressive massage. I took liquid echinacea, a dropper full, with a BIG squirt of liquid garlic in juice 4x a day, and homeopathic phytolacca and belladonna (at the advice of a naturopathic minded LC) It took a couple of days, but did clear.
I got it again about 5 months later (figured out caffeine triggers a clogged duct for me, no issues since dropping it) Tried the same therapies, but it was worse. I couldnt stand. I had to get ABX for that round, and strong ones. that
was 3 or 4 months ago now and Im still taking probiotics to recover from the abx.

i had it 1x. HORRIBLE. had a sudden fever/readness, that came on in less than 2 hours and the fever reached 107' and stayed for 2 days....i was out of my head delerious....went to er and they gave me strong antibiotics.....it was so painful! the antibiotics i was given was safe to nurse while taking...so i nursed through it....definitely go to the dr. as it can lead to sepsis/death!

Re: have you had mastitis?

i had it twice, once each with ds22 & ds3... it was HORRIBLE. I didnt end up going to the dr but I nursed, nursed, nursed.. took lots of hot showers, hand expressed and nursed some more.. I nursed the baby as much as he would. It took like 3 days of torture, totally black and blue breasts but it did get better. ((hugs)) the WORST thing you can do during mastitis is stop nursing, slow down, not use infected breast, exc. See a dr if you need to!!!
