I'm sure it varies family to family, but I would have taken her. My 2 year old kept vigil with us and was present when my grandfather passed. Personally, I feel that having death be somethig that happens behind closed doors makes it more frightening.

I am sorry for your loss. I have never had a pet that was not part of the family, and it's so hard to lose them.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'll be in your shoes soon and I'm not ready for it. But are we ever? Hugs to you mama!

Aw I'm so sorry for your loss mama. We had to put my childhood dog to sleep on valentines day last year and it was so hard. I did take my DD because she happened to be with me and my dad (who my dog lived with) the day we knew we needed to take him. DD is a very old soul. She had just turned 3. She was in the room with us and fed our dog a ton of treats, and we all loved on him. She was in there when they put him to sleep, and we just pet him while he slipped away. She was so great, she rubbed my back when I teared up and cried, and she told me he was in heaven with mamaw (her great gma). That being said, it would depend on your child. DD had already been to a funeral for her mamaw and was very respectful and awesome. My niece was also there when we put our dog to sleep, she's 6 months younger, and she is so different. She isn't very sensitive so she just didn't care. She was running around the room and kept looking at us weird when we teared up! So in hindsight, she probably wouldn't have come if we had thought about it.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss. We have 2 other doggies who are pretty young, and I already dread the day when they get old and it's their time. It will probaby be around when DD turns 13-14.

When we left the vet, she asked me where Brandy was, and I reminded her of what I told her last night, that once we brought her to the vet, she wouldn't come home with us.

I am glad your dd handled it well though. My initial thoughts were to find alternate care, mostly because you may be emotional yourself
