A lot will, but not all. I was recently contacted by a L&D nurse who works at a hospital that won't allow mom to see little one until they are back in their normal room. However, I am interested in facilities that actually allow you to hold LO right after birth in the OR, not just recovery. There is a lot of growing evidence of how important this is for mom and baby. It helps baby regulate temperature, breathing, sugar levels more effectively by being placed immediately on chest. By doing this simple act a recent study found that it cut down on admissions to the nicu by at least half of term babies with no other previous indication of health issues.

It also helps establish a good breastfeeding relationship early. In fact, the World Health Organization recently came out with the recommendation that baby be breastfeed with an half an hour, not an hour which was previously suggested.

It also facilitates a deeper bond with mom and baby.

Please note, too, that even if a particular doc says yes to those things, the person who truly runs to OR is the anesthesiologist. That being said, it is important to talk to one's doctor because they can have influence in the OR and can give input as to which hospitals that they have rights at are more supportive of such choices. I would also add that if a woman would like to have such options during a cesarean, it is wise to call the hospital well in advance and ask to speak with the head of anesthesia. Also, be prepared to calmly yet assertively talk to whoever ends up being your anesthesiologist during all the pre-op prep. This is where having a doula can be extremely helpful, too

I was able to hold my DD in the operating room after my c/s at Health Alliance Hospital in Leominster, MA - although I had DH hold her right by me so I could touch her as I was shaky from nerves. When they were close to finishing with me they took her (with my permission) to clean her up (she was really messy since she had/has a ton of hair) - DH went with her. DD was in the recovery room with me within 5 minutes of me getting situated. LC came in shortly after baby arrived to help me get her latched. They even unswaddled her before handing her to me to nurse. I've had 3 c/s now all at different hospitals and this was the best experince of them. My arms weren't tied down and I didn't even have to request it they just don't do it routinely. They really seemed mommy/baby centered instead of doctor centered.

My friend recently had a baby a Kent General Hosptial in Dover DE, she was able to put him chest to chest after baby was born.

When I had my son there I didn't, but I also didn't ask. However baby was kept with me the entire time. He was able to breast feed in the recovery room so he got to nurse within that crucial first hour.

Just wanted to update a year later and say my inverted T vbac went great!
