UK members, custard apple cake question

Hi,

I wonder if anyone has a link that could help. I lived in England for a year during my college studies and I ate the student food. I found the desserts were my preference of what was offered, and there were a couple that had custard over top that I just loved. One was a very sticky apple cake that was served with warm vanilla custard- it was heavenly. I don't know anyone around here that makes a similar dessert, and was wondering if anyone in our DS UK population might have a recipe for that sort of thing and would be willing to share it or a link?

To be honest i'm struggling to think. I can't think what you may not have in the US.
Apple cake covers such a wide variety of things

There are crumbles, crunchy on top and then fruit underneath but not generally sticky.

Maybe upside down cake? Apple or pineapple on top and spongecake underneath.
Steamed sponge pudding (they tend to be more domed in shape) that's quite moist and fruity on top. I guess that's the most british.
Apple drizzle cake.
Where abouts in the UK were you studying that may offer a few more clues.

I think it may have been the custard and cake combo that made it so unique (to me). Warm custard topping isn't something I see often. It was very moist, so I am wondering if it may have been the steamed pudding. It was different than the Christmas pudding they served though, which I also liked very much. But then it had kind of a syrup-y flavor to it, so maybe the upside down cake, but definitely not like our pineapple upside down cake that I make in my home. I am not sure what shape it was since it was served in pieces at my college. I was at the University of Cheltenham and Gloucester and living in Cheltenham.

Did you buy it in the supermarket or eat out? I know that some restaurants sell toffee apple cake & custard as a dessert, does that sound familiar?
